EMERGENCY services came under attack as they tried to save the life of a 21-year-old man in a swimming tragedy in the early hours of this morning.
A gang of youths, apparently from Cork city, had gone to the reservoir at Inniscarra approximately 15 miles from the city yesterday. It is understood that some of the group had been drinking and a number of them, including the deceased, entered the water.
At midnight, the man experienced difficulty and members of the group raised the alarm.
When emergency services arrived a number of people attacked the crews by throwing bottles and stones at them.
A large garda presence was required to protect rescuers as they tried to find Mr O’Driscoll.
His body was recovered an hour later at 1am and ambulance crews attempted to resuscitate the man.
The deceased was taken to Cork University Hospital when he was pronounced dead at the Accident and Emergency department.
“Rescuers came under attack at the scene – there was a lot of drunken people and some of they attacked the crews as they tried to save the man.
“Vehicles were damaged and it took a bit of time to bring the situation under control,” said a source.

A major emergency also led to Cork airport being evacuated this morning for 10 minutes… No plane crash, or terror plot, just some burnt toast in the canteen that set off the fire alarms.

I can alert the forum to the fact that the Fingal raven once caused the evacuation of Dublin airport and sung like a canary in a subsequent enquiry that resulted in a number of suspensions of fellow employees.
To present the raven in his proper light he did not regard it as meek capitulation. His realpolitik view was that he was in a bind and faced losing his job. He knew that giving names of others involved would lessen the punishment and he took the view that although some of those concerned were erstwhile colleagues and friends, that his own self preservation was more important. There is something admirable about the clarity he had in this making this decision and ease at which he gave names. When I confronted him he shrugged, and told me exactly what he said and mumbled something in Italian that i think meant ‘tell the truth and shame the devil’.
The long dark shadow of the aviation industry loomed large over Fingal in those days. Despite his excellent place kicking record at gga, the raven still had to go out and earn his beer money. One of the finest aeronautical baggage transit technicians of his generation I’d have to admit.
Don’t be so quick to knock him Julio-those fuckers creamed it for years and were on serious dough. Now the crafty cunt is caning it labouring over in Oz probably clearing $1000 a week . A canny enough operator is our Raven I’ve no doubt.
I suppose given the revelations above we have to consider that TASE/NCC/FR is was shipped to Oz on a witness protection program after he ratted out a few local criminals.
Again I just want to take issue with some of the terms used. Ratted wouldn’t describe what happened. Raven listenened to what was brig alleged in the fire alarm investigation. He then said that he had some information on others involved that he would happily share if it could positively impact his situation. He was not asked for names that he ratted up. In his mind he simply had something they wanted for which he traded for something they had which he wanted. He was extremely open about the whole thing. I’m sure he would describe himself as more a whistleblower than a rat. i know he identified with the serpico character from the al Pacino movie of the same name.
