I hope youâre hopping balls for the craic because for a normally composed and intelligent poster youâre really making inane arguments on this.
I wonât bother answering your first point because itâs stupid and does you a disservice.
To your second, no GAA games shouldnât be discommoded. Itâs their stadium and thatâs itâs primary use. Similarly a reasonable commercial rate should be charged for usage by other sports/events.
I dont think that just because EU/state funding went into a particular project should automatically mean that the entirety of that project should be left available and free for anyone to take at any time. PUC has corporate and entertainment facilities that would be far more useful to groups/events that is open and available to other groups.
But just because one particular sport gets a grant for funding should not necessarily mean that another sport can ride roughshod and get those same facilities. Whether that be soccer wanting to use a gaa pitch, or visa versa or any other sport who just want to use a pitch of some ground.
Despite the above, PUC should be let be used for this game. As long as the majority of proceeds are for charity, Iâd have zero issue whatsoever with it being used and it should be used. @tallback also made the point about the size of the ground and no need for another of that size should be built just for a different sport and that is 100% correct. Municipal stadiums should be the norm here for such a small country. It will never happen but there is an awful waste of funding and space used for stadiums with other ones in the vicinity for different sports who cant use it. Some bit of forward thinking was needed, however that would never happen here.
For what itâs worth I think the individual GAA clubs or in this case county boards should be free to use their facilities as they see fit. I think the rule prohibiting that will be lifted at the next congress, and not before time. If that means they want to host a charity soccer match then off they go, however if that means they want to tell the soccer crowd to go fuck themselves then thatâs their prerogative too.
This is basically a freak event, Cork city has no need, nor no desire for a stadium bigger than 7,000 for soccer or indeed rugby. If they did Iâd be all for the state helping with funding it.
The GAA would happily rent out the PĂĄirc to any sport that desires it and is willing to pay a fair rent. Said sport just has to put in an application which would go before the annual congress for review.
Thatâs where we disagree. My view is that if you put your paw out to get taxpayers money then you forfeit that right. You donât discommode yourself and you can charge for it, but you canât just implement a blanket ban on essentially latent political grounds.
As an aside, the rule imho is an embarrassment to the GAA and makes them out to be bigots in a way that the vast majority of GAA members arenât. Most Irish people indulge in all sports now, either as participants or spectators, and either way we should be encouraging more sport (and more funding) for kids and adults alike.
Just so we are clear. GAA clubs should have to facilitate Soccer and Rugby but not the other way around because itâs not practical?
Iâve no problem with government funded pitches only being multi purpose but then any soccer club looking for a grant should have space for a GAA match too
which terms are they not fulfilling? Remember, their facilities for corporate functions and their premium area catering/conference rooms are available to all sports and communities.
as per your own link:
in both those criteria, it only mentions facilities. PUC clearly opens its facilities for all the needs mentioned above. The only mention of the pitch is:
Note the âcould potentiallyâ in that paragraph. Hugely ambiguous. It would seem to me that they are not doing anything whatsoever untoward with regards to the conditions set out in the grant aid.
But still, it should be opened up and as that point says, it is extremely rare. As @Julio_Geordio says, it will go to vote at the next congress and be removed I reckon.
