Al Jazeera SPECULATING that the coup may only be organised by a faction of the Turkish military and may not have the support of its leadership.
I read elsewhere that Erdogan is believed to have filled the military leadership with people sympathetic to him.
There was a coup in Egypt only a few years ago. Only 1997 since the last one in Turkey.
The coup it hasn’t gone away you know

Ya there was a bit earlier that it was junior military leadership that were pushing it. A coup within a coup if you will. A coupception.
Standard enough in a coup the Franco coup was similar

Erdogan is apparently trying to phone his ministers but his phone can’t pick up a Recep-tion.
Like the hot pants, coups will always come back into fashion.
Hopefully that other staple of the 70s, gangs of aging mercenaries overthrowing governments, will make a comeback.

Turn on euronews. Theres a presenter on Turkish TV holding up a phone, talking to Erdogan on facetime. This is incredible.

How do the military actually formally take control? Is it just a case of the government resigning if the public don’t come out to back them?
A sign of weakness if you ask me.
Sky reporting erdogan is encouraging people to go on the streets. literally two minutes after they claimed he had said to stay off the streets
What’s NATO’s position in all of this?
This could get right messy.
NATO is a defensive pact against agression only. Civil wars not covered

The constant videos of cars driving on Turkish motorways with the odd tank thrown in for good measure on all the news channels get less interesting after an hour or so.

Amazing in this day and age of technology how little people can know about what’s actually happening
We need those jets to drop a few bombs or something. Live pictures of a deserted bridge ain’t really much good

Sky have gone live to another erdogan FaceTime interview now presumably for the benefit of all Turkish speakers as there is no translator.
She just asked the poor bastard charged with stringing along the news what he thought of his body language
