Covers that are Better than the Original

Keep the Car Running, bit of Fenton Falue!

Ah yeah I heard that there. Didn’t The Boss do that song live with them?

~I’m sure he did, could that be called a cover?

Nah not really. I was just asking.

‘No Cars Go’ by Arcade Fire is a cover of ‘The King of Rock and Roll’ by Prefab Sprout

Well - more or less

I remember you saying this. I cant hear it myself. I may play both songs on top of each other and see if its a match.

On the topic of songs ripping off other songs have a listen to Wonderwall, Witing to Reach You and Boulevard of Broken dreams. Same songs. Have a listen here and watch
Massive fan of Can Rocko 66 but never heard of that song either by them or Radiohead

I’m intrigued. What respective albums are the songs on?
Sorry. Song is actually just called ‘Thief’ and its on an album called ‘Delay 1968’ by Can.

Radiohead never actually released their cover of it but there are some pretty good versions of them playing it live around the time of touring Kid A. Version played at Warrington is really good sound quality.

Here’s the Radiohead version:

Happy Mondays’ Step on.

Madness One Step Beyond beats Prince Buster’s original.

Or does it ?

Weird, just found my Happy Monday’s CD under a couch in my house earlier on today!

The Madness version is much easier to bounce around too. I’d have to say yes, the madness version is better, although the Prince Buster clearly has it’s merits

This is better than the Pink Floyd original, made better by Van the Man’s powerful performance

Is it not just him singing over the original? I’d also disagree with the original assumption. He’s just singing it as Van and not in anyway realeasing the emotion of the tune. And I’m a comfartably drunk Pink Floyd fan right now.

Whilst very similar to the original, it was re-recorded with a few small differences (keyboard/piano kicks harder, a slightly rawer sound that heightens the grandeur of the song) that I think just improve it slightly. I’d disagree that Van doesn’t give it emotion. I like the contrast between him and Waters, and I think his booming voice suits and does better justice to the chorus. The original is a stonewall classic, no doubting that, just think the little bit of tinkering plus Van improve it.

Spirit in the Sky by Dr and the Medics is superior to the Norman Greenbaum original imo.
