Oddly unable = every second letter of unable ie ual

To follow = after US therefore “usual” which is routine

Any chance you could follow protocol and spoiler the answer?

It’s back to thinking of the straight clue which is nearly always first or last word in the telegraph.
I think in many ways, it’s about where in the clue you put the comma.

In the telegraph that would be something like “Reverend mother heard in deep void”
It would point that the answer sounds like it, but isn’t it exactly

I try to stay away from the thought process of the Telegraph, me old china.

Colin Dexter recommended it as the best of the cryptics. Good enough for me.
