GOLFER Rory McIlroy will be offered the chance to carry the Irish flag at the
opening ceremony of the 2016 Rio Olympics in return for pledging his sporting
allegiance to the country.
Pat Hickey, the president of the Olympic Council of Ireland, has attempted to sway the world number one after years of speculation about who McIlroy will declare for.
âI will say to Rory that if he declares for Ireland, then he will automatically put himself in pole position to carry the Tricolour into the stadium in Rio,â said Mr Hickey, who is also a board member on the International Olympic Committee.
âWhat he has done on the world stage for Irish golf is absolutely astonishing. Personally, I would dearly love for him to represent Ireland.â
In 2009, he claimed he would âprobably play for Great Britainâ as he has a UK passport, a stance he reiterated last month when he hinted in an interview that he has âalways felt more British than Irishâ.
McIlroy subsequently insisted he had not made up his mind, prompting Mr Hickey to tempt him to declare for Ireland with talk of being flag-bearer.
Golf makes its first appearance at the summer games since 1904 at the Rio Olympics.
âCan you just imagine what something like this would do for Rory McIlroy?â Mr Hickey added.
âIt would suddenly catapult him into the realms of being one of the most instantly recognisable sporting faces on the planet. Because make no mistake about it, thatâs what carrying the flag does for people.â
He said that he did not think that McIlroy had yet made up his mind despite a series of comments on who he might choose to represent.
McIlroy, already well established as one of golfâs true superstars, will be aware of the incentive that flag-bearing would carry.

Ah here-please tell me this is a joke.
Wrong on so many levels.
- Any chance we could have someone carry the flag who wants to represent the country?
- Giving this honour to a professional sports person is just plain wrong, itâd be the highlight of some amateurs career. Never mind giving it to this cunt, giving it to any multi millionaire is wrong.

I couldnât give a fuck who Rory represents tbh, i like the way he plays golf is all.
But under no circumstances should any professional sports person be carrying an olympic flag ahead of an amatuer.
Pat Hickey is now the pro facto cunt of the year, end of!
âRoryââŚFFS
This cunts cheerleaders are having great difficulty grinding back through the gears these past few weeks and months. Its been amusing to watch in its own way.
I see Rory was offered a way out of his dilemma of having to choose which country to play for in the Olympics, as it was suggested under some rule he had to play for Ireland. But no, he came straight out and dismissed it making it clear he wants to represent team GB, which is fine, if it wasnât for years of taking monies from Irish golf as a junior.
He is what he is CM, hopefully this will stop all the idiots claiming him as Irish
Youâd hope Fran, youâd hope. I doubt it however.
Heâs a weasel, just call it FFS.
Yes, he is a weasel but itâs okay because heâs not Irish anymore
