ate what you want, ate everything
I’m looking to purchase a road bike Budget is €800-€1000. It will be my first road bike, I’m ore of a runner but want this bike so I can do a few adventure races. Any advice from the forums top cyclists on what I should be looking at getting?
Give Paul Gammell a shout in Kilmallock Cycles. He’ll sort you out. He sells a lot of bikes for people getting into it.I got something handy for when I’m home for about 700.
Planet x
Carbon frame.
Shimano 105 or ultegra.
Can’t go wrong.
Id defo look for carbon. Ali is rough as.
I got a Felt Z100 about six years ago and I can’t complain about it at all.
Are you signed up for the Cycle to Work scheme and what races are you planning?
I’d say he’s after more than three Sturmey archers.
Is that an English thing?
Proper gears?
Maybe so.
Mavic wheels, cannondale tyres. Selle Italia saddle.
It is through the cycle to work scheme I was going to buy yea. I think I’m forced to choose between 3 of the local shops with it. As for races, nothing planned as of yet but I’d hope to do something around the end of summer.
For an adventure race do you need a mountain bike?
No. Pretty sure most of the ones around here the biking is on the road.
As above then. Can’t go wrong. Just need to be sure about your size. Planet x have a place near athlone iirc, or at least a lad who flips their stuff.

The Halfords bike is the only carbon fibre bike on the BTS for less than €1000. Go for a light aluminium (ali) bike. Most Carbon fibres will start around €1400 for a basic model. A very light aluminium bike will be only marginally heavier than a carbon fibre bike, the main difference is that carbon fibre is supposed to be a better conductor of the force that you push into the pedals to propel the bike.
Most mass produced bikes will be of similar quality, the specs may vary slightly from bike to bike.
Just my thoughts.
I’ve just discovered that the National Championships are taking place in Wexford this weekend. The senior road race is on Sunday starting in Wexford town and taking in 9 laps of an 18-km course which covers Crosstown, Castlebridge, Crossabeg and Ferrycarrig on the way back into town.
Good man yourself , thanks for the info. I thought you might plug the cube alright
What can I say, quality shines through. The Halfords bike might be closer to your heart though
What adventure races you doing pal?
Most of them have hilly cycles so weight, cassette, etc. are important factors.
If you could stretch over the grand, you’d have much better options open to you. I’ve seen fellas pay 700-800€ and change within six months.
You’d need a bike with at least Tiagra group set, but in all honesty, you should be looking for 105. Your budget won’t stretch to ultegra.
Someone mentioned wheels and specifically mavics. Many bikes come with Mavics as standard so look out for that in the spec
