Not quite sure how The New Yorker can allow an article to be published in which the journalist doesn’t know the difference between ensure, and insure, repeatedly mistaking the two.

That’s a New Yorker style guide thing. New York Times does the same.

Does that pass for correct spelling in America?
It read like an intercert error to me.

It’s more a legacy or archaic thing. The New Yorker has quite a unique style guide - like how they would print coöperate when they get two vowels in succession with a change in syllables.

That’s informative. I hope it doesn’t become an accepted Americanism because it is just incorrect.

Nah it’s an old interpretation on the way out as opposed to being a new fangled bastardisation.
