The brothers moved into the family house at home. 30 year old radiators, don’t seem to be emitting very much heat at all (oil tank was recently filled) - what remedial action should he take to improve their efficiency gents?
either take out the rads and empty them or just replace them…
Gut the system and make sure all the underfloor pipes are well insulated. Then look at the boiler if no improvement.
Try pumping some oil directly into the radiators through the valve in the top corner using a syringe or something similar. That should clear up any blockages in the system.
Can someone settle a bet re radiators?
What are the two ‘handles’ actually for on either side of a basic non-thermostat radiator?
Is the right hand one always the basic on/off or is it sometimes the left?

Depends on what way the Plummer fits it…it can be either side

Ya
If I can only twist the left hand ones and can’t twist the right hand one on any is it fair to say the left is the on/off side? What’s the other handle/knob actually for?
You’ll find the answer in this thread - http://www.thefreekick.com/board/index.php?threads/bleeding-radiators.13987/
Righty righty left loosey mate.
You’re welcome
Right cheers mac read that and still none the wiser.
All the rads in my new house have 2 knobs (like every other house I’ve ever lived in). Can someone please tell me what the two knobs on either side of a radiator are for? I’ve always just used one for on/off and ignored the other one. It’s now important cos I’ve had a bet with someone.

I think it’s to do with the water flow between other radiators around the house but I’m probably wrong …

Why the fuck do you think I’d know anything about radiators. Do I look like a plumber?
Can someone ask Rockos father in law?
Don’t worry about it fagan just thought the way you were talking in the thread mac linked to you sounded authoritative
It’s my father in law I have the bet with and he’s laughing away at me even though I’m almost sure the cunt is wrong.
He’s claiming the left hand knob is never the on/off. The left hand is the only one that’ll twist open and closed though.
I’m pinning my hopes on Kinvaras passion here. Another question when you see this KP is can I use either side to turn the radiator on and off? If not what are the dangers of using the wrong valve as my on/off?
This seems to be an area almost no one has a definitive clue about. I’ve trawled google for hours now and I’m none the wiser.
I don’t know, post up a picture of yourself.

My guess…
You could have a valve at both ends. Depending on which way the house the house is plumbed you would either use the one of the left or the right. So if water is flowing from left to right across a radiator then the valve on the left would be used to stop water entering the radiator AKA turning the radiator off.
Are ye lads tooting at the crack pipe to be putting on bets like this?

Haha you would imagine so!
On further inspection both valves will turn (when you move around the right white plastic cover)
How in the name of fuck do I work out which is the on/off?!
And in the event that I do what does the other one actually do?!
My fellow crack pipe smoker is claiming I will cause air locks and other possible disasters by turning the wrong valve.
I’d say you’d be safe enough just turning the one without the plastic cover
