I think it’s easiest to explain this in terms of the National Soap Awards in England.
There are traditionally two soaps who are consistently a considerable distance in front of the chasing posse - Coronation Street and Eastenders - in terms of quality of output.
Most years Coronation Street (Kilkenny) wins the ‘Best Soap’ award ahead of Eastenders (Cork) although Eastenders pips Coronation Street on occasion and shows a steely resolve not be left behind in Coronation Street’s wake.
In fact there was a period in recent times when Eastenders was actually regarded as a stronger all round show than Coronation Street but their old rival responded and wrestled the initiative back.
Meanwhile Emmerdale (Tipperary) has been very strong in the past and shocked everybody by winning the award around the turn of the millenium. They have failed to hit similar heights since and viewers often wonder will they ever experience the triumps of the halcyon Emmerdale Farm days.
But it’d be foolish to discount Hollyoaks (Wexford) as on its day there’s no other soap who can compete with its brilliance.
Admittedly, there are also many days when Hollyoaks is unwatchable but then out of the blue it produces a half hour (full hour if you watch the first episode on Channel 4 and the next one immediately after on E4) that simply blows the opposition to pieces and is unrivalled in its majesty.
These episodes are generally incredibly dramatic with endings that defy belief.
The difference between the National Soap Awards and the hurling championship every year is that the former is decided by virtue of the quality of over 150 episodes of the respective programmes.
However, Wexford just need one off the hook, off the chain ‘Hollyoaks type’ performance on Sunday similar to the episode where Claire tried to kill Max in the lake last Christmas and Kilkenny won’t stand a chance.
They’ll be busy having one of Betty’s Hot Pots in The Rovers and we’ll be heading to the All-Ireland FInal.

Great response Bandage. Throw it up on the other site, should give a few lads a giggle from it.
