Dev was really shit in 1916, couldnât make his mind up, never committed his men to battle. I believe they were begging to be allowed go up the canal to help out Malone and Grace who were engaging the Sherwood Foresters almost on their own. But Dev said no. Useless.
I think his greatest achievement was however codding the Treaty Ports back from the Brits, you would have to say that was a spectacularly good outcome to an otherwise disasterous economic war. Have no doubt at all the British navy jack would be flying over Cobh as we speak were it not for that spectacular diplomatic victory in '38.
