Let them wallow in it for the weekend.

The only time I was ‘let go’ (I was 21, brought in for a few months and knew it probably wouldn’t get extended) was on a Friday morning when I saw a more experienced replacement in for a meeting. The bossman told me that I could stay on another week if I wished. I made a call at lunch, had another bit of work lined up from the following Monday, and told him I’d finish up that evening. Ended up on the beer in Offaly at an engagement party for a couple I did not know

I was always told to give bad news on a Friday. Gives them a chance to think about it over the weekend and not make any bad decisions.
