Location: North-West England, where Jewell is from and based.

Timing: Jewell is currently unattached having resigned as Wigan manager in May and with him having cited needing time away from the game as the main reason for his resignation then 5 months is an ample holiday.

Cost: Bolton will not need to pay any compensation to another club as he’s not under contract.

Trends: Bolton have a history of appointing young, hungry English managers with potential - little Sammy, big Sam, even back to Colin Todd when he was a prospect.

Suitability: Jewell has shown he is an accomplished operator at smaller, less fashionable clubs like Bradford and Wigan - taking both of them into the top flight and then managing to keep them there. Though Bolton are similarly ‘unattractive’ compared to the top 4 clubs and other clubs in the bright lights of London they have more ambition and finances to progress than the other two. Jewell has proven he’s adept at survival and his record even saw him mentioned in some quarters as a future England manager and he’s earned the right to be awarded a bigger job. Bolton would fit the bill, given what he’s achieved in the past as well as offering him the opportunity to progress in Europe. It’s a strategic fit.
Main threat might be Gary Speed but it’s probably too early for him.
