Eircom League this weekend

I went to the hurling as did my bro and dad but my bro-in-law made the bold decision to venture out to Newcastle to watch Wexford Youths FC’s first ever home league game.

We won 1-0 and there was an official attendance of over 2,000. Pretty impressive set up according to him too so I look forward to checking out some of their games as the season progresses.

Just reading our enigmatic manger’s programme notes there. He recalls the come from behind draw against Monaghan and then our U-18s winning the All Ireland QF after extra time last weekend. His final paragraph goes:

‘Monday morning, a lovely calm, warm feeling. A bit like the aftermath of passionate sex.’

Come on the youths!

Also watched most of Cork City-Galway on the box the other night and I concluded that the youths would take either of them. We’re gonna win the cup. We’re gonna win the cup. hi5

Thats a great win for the Wexford team, fair play.
Was reading an article on the team at the weekend and how Wallace was over in Italy during the week attending Juventus training sessions, looking for inspiration and tactics.
Cheers for the update bandage, any further information (team info, match reports) and updates would be greatly appreciated.
Looking forward to going to see a game myself. Do you know the fixtures? Are they playing at home easter weekend?

Here’s the link to the fixtures Bainne:

Not sure what day Easter falls on so you can check yourself!

Can’t find the programme now but they have a pool of 28 players and pick 18 from that for each match day squad. Going from memory now but some of the players that featured were.

Anthony Russell in goal is ex Ajax Athletic. His brother Jason is one of the full backs and that Garrett Larkin lad is one of the centre backs. Conor Sinnott is centre midfield along with a guy called Tom Elmes who scored the goal yesterday. Elmes is London born but lives in Wexford and works as a carpenter. Johnny Flynn-O’Connor plays up front and captains the side but I’m having a mind blank now.

John Delaney, our esteemed FAI leader, was down at the historic game.

Cheers for the link mate.
Gareth Larkin in defence is an important player and especially experience wise judging by some of the names i’ve heard in the squad. Nice balance of experience and youth is important.

Looks like i’ll be aiming to head to the Kildare County match on sun 8th April. Will you be around that weekend?

Had initially planned on going to the Celtic game that weekend as I expected them to be receiving the championship trophy. Yesterday’s defeat scuppers that so I’ll probably be home that weekend.

Think our footballers are playing their last league game at home that day so I’ll have to give Wexford Youths FC a miss!

Thought United played very well but Armstrong and then O’Flynn were completely isolated up front. Not sure what Murphy’s instructions were but thought he should’ve been making more of an effort to get up there. Was shocked that Lester got man of the match. Thought he should’ve been replaced by Russel on the hour mark. Was unimpressed by James at right back and his replacement Alan Keane is shi’it. We may well rue releasing Keady, Harty and Curran. All in all though it was encouraging stuff and I really liked the fact that we played football from the back rather than just hoofing the ball all the time which used to be the norm.

Glad to see there’s no bias there Bandage, given that you haven’t seen your team play! :http://www.thefreekick.com/board/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

Was waiting for somebody to pick up on that!

Thought with a bit more belief you could have sneaked a win at the end.

Was Lester the centre midfielder or the centre back again? Was impressed by the no-nonsense defending of the black guy at the back. That Foley guy in midfield was putting in a few tasty tackles.

Lester was the sizeable centre midfielder alright. That big centre back is Wes Charles, who I had doubts about but thought he was excellent on Friday night. Foley’s a good player. He was in the First Division team of the season last year as was the left midfielder, Derek O’Brien. O’Brien’s great at beating guys but let down by his final ball. Still, as I said, encouraging.
