Maradona has criticised Messi in the recent past for being a bottler, not being a leader and having no personality.

Messi is widely disliked and mistrusted in his own country. He has been accused in many quarters of choosing managers and impacting of selection decisions. It is believed that he is the reason Icardi is not being selected at present. Even Dybala confirmed last week that Messi is basically a prick. Burdisso had a fight with him in the Cops America a number of years back about Messi’s work rate. The stats say he is ineffective at the business end of major tournaments. Argentina have just had a very bad qualifying campaign this tournament.

Unless Messi is vital to bring defensively miserly then I don’t think you can hold much weight in his contribution to Argentina at international level.

No they’ve just had a bad qualifying campaign, they’ve sacked their coach. There could be a 101 different reasons why they’re struggling, they’ve had some bad results this campaign but some decent ones without Messi too, they beat Colombia away without Messi, they drew with Brazil without Messi as opposed to a 3-0 defeat with him in the team. Maybe it’s more down to the coach being an idiot, the games Messi has tended to miss have predominantly been away matches.
