Euro 2012 - Other Squads

Germany are announcing a preliminary squad tomorrow morning.

Speculation that the uncapped Tony Jantschke of Moenchengladbach will be in today’s German squad.

Preliminary German squad will be 27 players and will include 4 goalkeepers.

Goalkeepers:

Neuer, Wiese, Ziele, ter Stegen

Defenders:

Badstuber, Boateng, Hummels, Mertesacker, Howedes, Lahm, Schmelzer

Midfielders:
Schweinsteiger, Khedira, L Bender, S Bender, Gundogan, Kroos, [i]Draxler/i, Reus, Gotze, Muller, Ozil, Schurrle, Podolski

Strikers:

Gomez, Klose, Cacau

That Draxler lad is only 18. Presuming he’s just there for experience and will be culled from the 23 man squad along with ter Stegen and at least one Bender. Guys in italics are above are who I expect to drop out of final squad.

Is Gundogan a surprise inclusion? I don’t rate Cacau at all, anytime I’ve seen him he has been average at best, could they not have included another full back of attacking player in place of him - I’m sure Muller and Podolski would make better strikers than him and it could allow them to include someone like Holtby or another.

Well it’s still a 27 so Gundogan is one of those who may or may not be in the final squad. Probably only one of Gundogan and the Benders will travel.

I don’t rate Cacau at all either. It’s just a question of whether it’s too risky to only bring two out and out strikers. I had thought he’d do that and have Muller and Podolski as backup but the German media seem to think Cacau will survive the cull. The main logic being that the four players who won’t make the final squad are in it for experience, not for cover at this stage.

Preliminary 36 man squad for the Dutch.

No Drenthe, Elia or Van Wolfswinkel.

Goalkeepers: Erwin Mulder (Feyenoord), Jasper Cillessen (Ajax), Maarten Stekelenburg (Roma), Michel Vorm (Swansea City), Tim Krul (Newcastle United).

Defenders: Wilfred Bouma (PSV Eindhoven), John Heitinga (Everton), Joris Mathijsen (Malaga), Stefan de Vrij (Feyenoord), Ron Vlaar (Feyenoord), Gregory van der Wiel (Ajax), Jetro Willems (PSV Eindhoven), Khalid Boulahrouz (Stuttgart), Erik Pieters (PSV Eindhoven), Nick Viergever (AZ Alkmaar).

Midfielders: Vurnon Anita (Ajax), Mark van Bommel (AC Milan), Nigel de Jong (Manchester City), Siem de Jong (Ajax), Hedwiges Maduro (Valencia), Adam Maher (AZ Alkmaar), Stijn Schaars (Sporting Lisbon), Wesley Sneijder (Inter Milan), Kevin Strootman (PSV Eindhoven), Rafael van der Vaart (Tottenham Hotspur), Georginio Wijnaldum (PSV Eindhoven), Urby Emanuelson (AC Milan).

Attack: Ibrahim Afellay (Barcelona), Klaas Jan Huntelaar (Schalke), Ola John (FC Twente), Luuk de Jong (FC Twente), Dirk Kuyt (Liverpool), Jeremain Lens (PSV Eindhoven), Luciano Narsingh (Heerenveen), Robin van Persie (Arsenal), Arjen Robben (Bayern Munich).

Drenthe was hardly expected to be in the mix, was he rocko?

Not in the final shake-up but he could have made that very extended squad.

Was wondering why the left back for Bayern, Alaba [or Ali Babba as Johnny Giles calls him], was not in the squad. I had assumed he was German. Turns out he’s the youngest capped Austrian in history.

Great to see Freddy Boomer in the Dutch squad.

when will wRoy be naming his squad lads

Doesn’t he have to sort out the whole Terry / Ferdinand thing first? Probably won’t be until well after the Champs League final.

only the extended squad aint it though?

fair play to him alright. seemed his career was finished after that injury at the villa.

Yea it has to be cut down still. Great to see him involved though . He suffered a horrific injury at Villa Park and thought he’d never play again at the time.

Puyol out for 6 weeks and will more than likely miss Euros. Wouldn’t trust Ramos in centre half for the whole tournament.

Ramos is the best defender in Spain.

Does this mean Iraola will play at right back?

Looks that way. Arbeloa is the other option, or they could play Javi Martinez beside Pique and retain Ramos at right back but I think Iraola will get the nod as he is the form choice
