Euro 2016 - Group Stage thread

Iā€™ve had that said before, if you were a decent bloke in ā€˜real lifeā€™ why would you spend your time belittling strangers and trying to give it large with new posters on the internet, that doesnā€™t add up.

1st game of a tournament, incredibly naive to judge on that

+1

Donā€™t think thereā€™s any outstanding teams in this tournament. Looking at the squads its one of the poorest tournaments in terms of strength that I can recall and the main three contenders all look beatable.

Spain and Germany probably have the most quality but are considerably weakened by the absence of Xabi Alonso (who proved this year that heā€™s still one of the very best midfielders in Europe) in Spainā€™s case and the absence of Philip Lahm and Marco Reus as well as the retirement of Miroslav Klose and the decline of Bastian Schweinsteiger in Germanyā€™s case.

France will certainly benefit from home advantage but I still think they lag a bit behind Spain and Germany.

I think thereā€™s a great chance for an outsider to nip in and win it and I think England have as good a chance as anybody, so Iā€™m tipping them to emerge as champions.

Lovely use of the arm by Giroud to impede the keeper.

Evra is a bomb scare.

Evra was a great left backā€¦but heā€™s well past his best now.

Had a shocker tonight. Fancy France to get to the semiā€™s at least though, their poor defence wonā€™t be tested until then imo.

England could be in trouble in the group mateā€¦could end up3rrd.hope Iā€™m right. They are defensively weak and wont make the semis. And they have a coach who wont play his best forwards

Huge game against the Welsh on Thursdayā€¦pity itā€™s on at 2 clockā€¦awkward time.

I wonder will @Tassotti take a half day and roar them on.

I donā€™t rate Russia very highly, since the end of the USSR theyā€™ve only ever made any sort of impact in one major tournament, and I expect England to take care of business in a workmanlike fashion.

Should be plain sailing after that in the group.

Just looking at the draw here and it looks set up for an England-Portugal quarter-final in Lille on July 1st, which would be exactly 10 years to the day since the two teams played out a World Cup quarter-final in Gelsenkirchen in which Cristiano Ronaldo shamefully play acted to get young Wayne Rooney sent off.

I fully expect the Liverpudlian to have his revenge this time.

Evra was never a great.

Lose or draw tomorrow and they are under pressure. Statistics mate, England have in the last few tournaments easily qualified but flattered to deceiveā€¦ Its a young enough team, dodgy at the back and havenā€™t brought one of the best workhorse midfielders. The Russians will be good on the ball, can the England play as a team ? Lose here mate they are in trouble and it will be a slog but I expect them to get out of group but be gone by Qtrs. A team with lesser players will knock the cunts out

:grin::+1:

NEVERā€™
Found out after his 1st season where he looked good

I havenā€™t been as excited about an England team in years.

Harty is the best goalkeeper in the world and a big game player.

The defence is under rated - Smalling and Cahill will be a very solid pairing. Clyne has come into his own for Liverpool while Danny Rose is a tremendously wholehearted player, even if heā€™ll probably turn out to be a bit shit at this level.

In midfield, Dier and Alli are ready to dominate the tournament, while Jack Wilshere should be fresh as a daisy after five years out injured.

Now that Raheem Sterling is not playing for a rival team with a poisonous dressing room, he should thriveā€¦

And this team has the most English firepower seen in Europe since 1945.

It does also have Henderson and Lallana, however.

But hey, Germany have Schweinsteiger, Spain have Fabregas, and France have a few no-nos from shit teams like Crystal Palace and Leicester, so it evens out.

The backs arent great mate, i wouldnt mind have them in our team (with coleman) but to win a tournament no imo. The 2 midfielders you mention are exciting but they wont know whats going on at the business end , they dont know what holding on to the ball and probing is all about. Play that midfield against spain, italy, crouts they will be schoolboys. Whilshere is a player i like with huge potential no games behind him And firepower? Kane is good alrite, better than greaves, owen, liniker, charlton to name a few since 45, come on pal. And if you say vardy dont forget the season clive allen had, its a big step up for him mate. + he wont start it will be rooney whos legs and head are gone. Dont be excited about england man, they have an average coach too. Me thinks you are winding me pal. You going over ye?

Really looking forward to seeing England this evening, will be out for most of the afternoon so wonā€™t see much of the others.
Personally I think their defence is decent, Rose and Clyne are very good going forward.
Rooney has a big tournament left in him, Alli could well thrive on tournament football. A lot depends on Kaneā€™s goals, we should know an awful lot more after the tough opener this evening.
I was to go to the Apres Match in Dolans for it but something came up and I canā€™t make it, anyone ever been to one of those? Any good?

Looking forward to watching the Swiss here. Xhaka, Rodriguez and Shaqiri are always a pleasure to watch
