Outside the Parc Des Princes on Tuesday, I talked to an Ireland fan in his 70s who’s been following them all his life, a really lovely man. He told me all about being in Valencia when Ireland beat Spain in the 1982 World Cup. He was also a fan of the Eire team and hugely complimentary about them and their supporters. Numerous Ireland fans came up to the Drain who was wearing an Eire jersey and wished him good luck for the game against Italy. I talked to two cousins, one from Fermanagh who was wearing an Ireland jersey, one from Dublin. Both were Ireland and Eire supporters, and when neither they or us could get tickets we went back to the fanzone under the Eiffel Tower, watched the second half and drank the night away. The next morning, I had a smoke and a chat outside Gare Du Nord with two lads from Ballymoney and we agreed how great the previous night was and how we’d love to see Eire progress against Italy. It was genuinely touching to experience the all-Ireland solidarity. We are one island, and we can all get along just fine.
