I’m struggling to think of one - notwithstanding the claims of some that the 1-1 draw in Paris in November 2009 (which saw France win 2-1 on aggregate in the World Cup play off) constituted a win for Éire.
We won that game 1-0 mate. The “equaliser” came during the tiebreaker… i.e extra time.
It’s the same way that a win in a penalty shoot out is officially counted as game ended in a draw.
UEFA have awarded Russia a 3-0 victory over Montenegro after their match was abandoned due to some high jinx amongst the Montenegrans* in the crowd.
Don’t know who scored the goals
- no idea if this is correct term for people from Montenegro

Surprised there was trouble at this. I was in Montenegro once and the place was full of Russians. They supported Serbia/Montenegro around the time of the war too.
Turkey have gone ahead away to Czech Republic. Even a point for Turkey would keep Netherlands in 4th spot so things looking grim for them.
Wales on the verge of sealing qualification tonight. 0-0 in Bosnia after 68 minutes and Israel are losing at home to Cyprus.
The gangly Bosnian sub striker has them in front with a deft looping header.
I think Wales still qualify unless Israel win tonight.
Nir Bitton with a 30-yard screamer has Israel level.
Cyprus back in front. Wales are useless. We’ll murder them in WC 2018 qualifying. Hopefully we get them in our group next summer too.
Gone 2-0 down now. Pathetic stuff.
Arda Turan did some lovely work in build up to goal to put Turkey 2-0 up. Draw at home to Iceland and they knock out the Dutch.
Chris Coleman is going to manage a team in a major tournament.
Coleman giving it the hard man act and storming off. Then gets told they’re through and comes striding back out giving it big licks. To think Charlotte Jackson gets dicked by this big simple bastard.
Cookie has always appeared to be quite fond of himself.
Ah FFS thats only gone and ruined my night.
Bale fixing the hair for the interview, sake.
Albania are 2-0 up in Armenia and a win will see them qualify in 2nd place behind Portugal. That leaves Denmark in 3rd and into the play-offs.
Dunphy having a break down and attacking Daragh Maloney
What was the issue?
Dunphy accused O’Neill of an agenda re Wes hoolahan. Daragh Maloney quoted a stat and Dunphy went off on one about his 17 year professional career and DM not knowing what he was talking about
DM just corrected an eamo stat. This could be funny
Sounds like Darragh is trying to wind him up now and just stifled a laugh
What are the preferences for playoff oppostion gents?
I think we’ll struggle to beat anyone over two legs unfortunately.
As it stands we are unlikely to be seeded, though there are some games still to be played out.
From Group A, Turkey sit in the playoff spot two points ahead of the Dutch. They play Iceland in the last game needing only a point to go through, while the Dutch play Czech Republic having to win and hope for the best.
We need the Turks here as they are ranked below us. In addition the Dutch would be tough potential oppostion in the playoffs no matter how shite they’ve been lately.
Group B is between Bosnia & Israel. Bosnia are a point ahead and playing Cyprus in the last game, while Israel play Belgium so you’d have to give Bosnia the nod. Bosnia are ahead & Israel below us so we are rooting for Israel here.
Group C is between Ukraine & Slovakia. Both on level points but Slovakia ahead on results between them. Slovakia play Luxembourg in the last group game so barring catastrophy it’ll be Ukraine in the playoffs. Ukraine play Spain and if they managed to beat a Spainish side with nothing to play for could move into top spot of the thirds and go through automatically. That is potentially significant as Hungary currently hold top spot and are ranked 18th while we are 19th. Our win over Germany could nudge us past them when the rankings are recalculated.
Group D is us.
Group E will be Slovenia barring a very unlikely sequence of results. Even a point against San Marino would be enough and they probably don’t even need that. Slovenia are ranked just behind us in 22nd.
Group F is Hungary. As discussed above ideally they’d be knocked out of the top slot from our point of view.
Group G is between Sweden & Russia. Russia two points ahead playing Montenegro in the last match. Sweden play Moldova. Whoever comes out of this will be seeded ahead of us.
Group H is between Croatia and Norway. Norway play Italy and Croatia play Malta. Norway two points ahead but very possible that the Croats could pass them out if Italy do them a favour. Croatia ahead in the head to head so even a draw for Norway & win for Croatia would be enough. Norway ranked below us so that would be significant were they to get through.
Group I. Denmark are the third place here and ranked 14th so would be seeded ahead of us.
So likely playoff teams are:
Turkey
Bosnia*
Ukraine*#@
Ireland
Slovenia
Hungary*@
Sweden*
Norway
Denmark*
*Are teams ranked higher than us currently.
@Are teams with a chance of topping the third places.
There are currently 5 teams in that ranked ahead of us. One of which will go through automatically.
So in our ideal scenario two of the following is needed.
Ukraine beat Spain qualifying automatically, knocking Hungary into playoffs and we pass them out when reseeded.
Croatia go through knocking Norway to third or Israel get through in third.
Boom seeded.
Realistically the seeded teams look like Ukraine, Sweden, Bosnia, Denmark. We’ll struggle against any of them. If I had to pick it’d be Denmark or Sweden I suppose but none are easy.
All of the above is based on the premise that rankings don’t fluctuate dramatically. I’ve no idea whether that is true or not.
