That team never had a deep lying playmaker / decent CDM, same as current lot. 2 of KP / Rice / Henderson won’t be good enough at this level. Bellingham + 1 would be better, but Southgate will hardly pick him

Carrick never got much of a look in which was very odd.
They looked very dangerous at Euro 2004 when Rooney and Owen were both on form. The decline of Michael Owen thereafter was another reason they didn’t even reach a semi-final at a tournament.
Weren’t they always very rigid with their old school, John Bull, 4-4-2 football?
They’d always end up with a Crouch or Heskey on the pitch getting in the way once Owen was finished.

Foden, Grealish and Mount at least give them some lads who will retain the ball. They have the firepower up front. Bellingham’s development will be huge alright, they need someone who can link the play. Maguire and Stones will take on a lot coming out with the ball in this one.

The keeper isn’t much either, keeper, centre back and the lack of a controlling midfielder is where they are short. I think they will play a lot on the counter, probably need Sterling or Rashford to find a bit of form for this.
I’ll be intrigued to see how he fits in Mount, Grealish and Foden, could see Grealish missing out, don’t think Southgate trusts him.
