The only purpose I could see Trent having in a major tournament is if you are chasing a goal in Extra Time or something and the game is completely chaotic.
He’d be worth a shot then, but other than that I’d have Walker/James/Trippier ahead of him.

A combination of him and John Stones would be carnage as they both cant hold a line…
Dias carried Stones thru the EPL (he bossed him) whereas VVD covered Arnold.
I would say Arnold would be a very decent right winger or in a 352 can play RWB but he needs a man to cover his defensive issues…maguire I’m not sure has the legs for that

Southgate never plays a 4 at the back - it’s always 3 and he seems to have used Walker on the right of that 3 a few times. With wing backs then.
He may change that now to get extra bodies in the attack given the amount of talent they have up there but I don’t think he will. It will be some variation of 3-4-3/3–5-2
Walker covering RB/RCB - James is a very good player and I’d start him, I’d have TAA and Trippier around the same go, defensively, neither of them are great. TAA would give you more going forward but I think Southgate wants his full backs/wing backs to be conservative

This is Senior Hurling though and you just couldn’t trust him.
It’s actually Henderson who largely covers for Trent. VVD plays left centre back.
Klopp allowed Robertson and TAA to bomb on because of VVD at the back. They’ve had to play more traditional full back roles because of his absence and he has been exposed because of it. There was an actual requirement on him to defend.

TAA has played in a defence that conceded 11 goals in 15 games since March. Albeit Big Nat Phillips and Big Rhys Williams to cover him
English managers don’t trust talent and it’s why Southgate has never been a top manager and no English manager manages a top EPL team.
against who though? Palace, Burnley and Sheffield United. He has been badly burned against quality.

Southgate took over a Boro team who’d just been in the UEFA cup final and had them relegated within 3 years. Did well at the World Cup in 2018 but they didn’t actually take any major scalps and were fortunate to be on the softer side of the draw. He’s done well since but the jury is still out on his capabilities against the likes of France/Portugal/Belgium.

It’s international football
As an out and out defender Trent isnt international standard — he’s not a defender and never will be. I’ve no idea what system England play, I havent seen them since the last world cup but unless he plays a 5-3-2 or a system that accommodates him, I cant see TAA getting a look in… He can be a game changer tho - he offers a lot going forward and he would have been worth a gamble for when you need something different but there’s only so many players you can bring.
England , as always, are short a bit of tactical / technical nous in the middle - when it comes to beating the top nations at tournaments you gotta be able to control games and keep the ball. It’s still not in the tan makeup.
