Euro 2020 thread (Part 1)

I think I’d like to see England do well in this just to stick it right up their own former supporters’ holes.

What’s this in reference to?

Is it not fairly obvious? If it’s not obvious enough, it’s in reference to the supporters booing the team for taking the knee.

I think we’re going to hear a lot more about this over the next couple of weeks and it’s going to be a major fault line in English society as a whole. I think it’s a fault line that needs to be exposed, because there is a significant section of English society that is firmly on the wrong side of it. And they need to be challenged and their moronic reasoning exposed for what it is - deep seated racism - which is rotting English society.

It wasn’t obvious to me as I wasn’t following their games over the weekend. I think you’re wrong if you think their “former” supporters wouldn’t be the happiest people in the world if they win the Euros

Well I think it’s noteworthy that certain rent a gob right wing politicians are publicly withdrawing their support from the team. The team has placed itself firmly on the right side of history and against the racists in its support. I think it’ll be very interesting to see how this develops. A large section of the England support uses the team purely as a tool to satisfy their wet dreams of Empire and white supremacy in this “unheroic” age. But that’s not what the team is, it’s a representation of English diversity and multiculturalism, and that irks the fuck out of them. The team publicly asserting such is exposing just what that section of the support is, in all its scumminess.

That section of the support has turned a lot of English society as a whole off the team over the years, certainly in terms of going to matches. Maybe if the team continues to so publicly repudiate them, that will change and the England team will broaden in appeal to minorities. It badly needs to do so.

Whatever about Southgate’s talents as a football tactician, on which the jury is still out, as a man he does seem very admirable. This is a fine, progressive rallying cry.

Can we keep politics out of the euros threads ?

Eh International sport thrives on politics.

I sort of fancied England for this but they are completely imploding. Rashford and Sterling should both be dropped while Henderson and Maguire are clearly injured.

Even grealish who’s unlikely to start is adored by the support could cause big issues for Southgate. I wouldn’t be shocked if they didn’t make it out of the group phase.

Very hard to see them not make it out of the group stages as if they finish third they will likely make it through.

I can see the Scotch beat them though.

Given the size of the Portuguese diaspora in Luxembourg I will be supporting Ronaldo & co for this tournament.

Benzema limps off for France. Looks like Giroud in line to start.

Foden’s haircut is an abomination.
