SCOTT WALKER: 30 CENTURY MAN
THE SINGULARLY STRANGE AND REMARKABLE CAREER OF LEGENDARY MUSICIAN SCOTT WALKER COMES UNDER LONG-OVERDUE SCRUTINY IN THIS FASCINATING DOCUMENTARY.

Charting Walkers early development and success as a member of prototype boy band The Walker Brothers to the recording of 2006s 'The Drift, director Stephen Kijak presents a portrait of an artist with a unique vision. While the honeyed voice of The Sun Aint Gonna Shine Anymore remains, Walker has evolved musically from such Spectorlike creations to carefully-wrought soundscapes that defy categorisation. Working alone in seemingly uncharted territory, he developed into one of the most unusual songwriters of our time.

The film follows Walkers search for his creative voice, from those days as a teen heartthrob to his movement away from the world of mainstream pop. A myth built up around him as he retreated from live performances and took ever longer to release new albums, leading to a public perception of him as a dour, humourless hermit. Taking advantage of free access to the man himself, Kijaks film presents a very different picture of an artist who, while undeniably focused on his work, is articulate, open and self-deprecatingly witty.

Although Walker is often portrayed as a marginal figure, the film assesses his contribution as central to contemporary popular music. The argument is bolstered by interviews with figures covering the entire spectrum, from Cathal Coughlan to Sting. Those unfamiliar with Walkers work will have a new world opened up to them. Fans will rejoice that, despite the wealth of new information, a pleasing mystique still surrounds Scott Walker.

Saw something about it on the paper last week but I thought it was out on DVD. Cheers Rock - I may well head to that. Apparently its meant to border on the music snobbery side, as in it focuses more on his recent, hard-to-listen stuff instead of his sixites pop hits with The Walker Brothers. Suits me down to the ground

Every night

Harness on the

Then higher above

Canā€™t go by

I herad that song on the radio last night for the first time - canā€™t say I liked it. At all. Cit O Riordan (ex Pogues) was on saying it was pure genius and possibly the best and most creative piece of music ever written. Each to their own I suppose.

I did hear one of his earlier songs (from his more ā€œpopā€ era) and it was a decent tune alright. Not sure what the name of it was.

Did you? Who was playing it?

The intro is incredibly weird but if you get over that then it blows you away. It is actually the most listenable song from that album ā€˜Tiltā€™. Donā€™t know what song you heard - could it be ā€˜The Sun Aint Gonna Shine Anymoreā€™ by the Walker Brothers? FYI None of them were brothers - Scott Engel is his real name. He has four albums Scott 1 through to 4 in the late 60s/earlier 70s which were easy to listen to so the song could have come from there either. I have 1 and 4 on CD if you wanna burn them.

You a fan of Sinead Oā€™Connor Rocko? Ever hear a song called Red Football from the album Universal Mother?
Fucking fantastic

Not much of a Sinad Oā€™Connor fan but I did have Universal Mother and think I remember the song.

It was Dave Fanning playing the tracks (on my way to astro). Other one was certainly a Walkers Brothers song probably the one youā€™ve named above.

He talked over most of the second half of Farmer In The City which was annoying and I wasnā€™t even liking the song.

Wouldnā€™t call myself an Oā€™Connor fan either but that song is special

It starts with a bare piano and her voice giving out about a guy using her as a football. Then she says that ā€˜Iā€™m an animal in the zoo who is going to jump up and eat youā€™. Then the song gets really loud and sheā€™s singing lalalalalalalalalalalalala and it actually sounds like she has jumped up and eaten you

Great stuff

Might go along and see that. He has had an influence on some artists I like. Last two times I have been in the IFI though I have sat on some randomer in the middle of a film and scourned at for eating during a film. Not sure it likes me.
