Father Ted

A perfect illustration of the Father Ted legacy last night - flawless second series folllowed by a hugely disappointing third series

They had a double bill of the last episode of the second series where the plane in going to crash and the first of third series where he offends the Chinese conmmunity. The former is one of the best ever episodes and the latter was embarassingly bad

I just cannot agree with that at all. The Chinese episode is superb in my opinion. I don’t see any difference in quality from series to series in Father Ted - I think you’re treating them like separate entities and looking to evaluate them separately. Like when people said the second series of The Office wasn’t as good as the first. Of course it was.

Agree on The Office.

Re Ted the reason that the series stick out as separate as there was such a distinct difference in quality between the first two and the third. How can you call the Chinese one superb? The story about the black priest socks was terrible and the ‘I hear your’e a racist’ line was flogged to death. Dire rubbish considering what had gone before.

I can’t explain how good the episode is to you if you don’t like it. I enjoyed the parts you are referring to. I’ve never heard anybody else suggesting that series 3 is weaker - so I think it’s unusual.

That’s fair enough - I thought that I would throw it out there to see if anyone agrees. I have come across many people who share the same opinion as me but it is all about opinion at the end of the day

thats just your sihcozphrenia

Hey Ball, really thought I’d hear from you on the NFL and wrestling threads. You really have disappointed me, you so called American.

No way farmer, don’t agree with you there at all. The ‘Chinese’ father ted is one of my favourites, that slide show he does in front of all the Chinese in that hall, yer wan swining the shopping bags, ridiculously funny!

I thought the 3rd series flagged too.

I don’t know if it’s the right word but I thought that Chinese one and the stolen sheep one were a bit forced and you could also predict the punchline in advance. A bit like every single episode of Only Fools and Horses really.

Bandage, you’re comment regarding Only Fools and Horses was something I mentioned on Stephens day and it was met with with ridicule, glad to find someone who agrees with me.

As for Fr. Ted I thought the standard never really dipped at all. The Chinese episode is great, “feckin greeks”.

I know that you are only trying to goad me Bandage so I won’t take the bait. I am happy to see that you agree re Ted.

poor attempt to diversify. wrestling is fookin scheidt, a load of fat bastards on steriods (the only interesting thing about wrestling is finding out where some of the wrestlers of yester year are: eg, Razor Ramon in the gutter, the Ultimate Warrior blowing men off for 5 dollars a go, and eddie guerro 6 feet under).

Stick to the bogger GAA.

im open to watching the odd nfl game. not that well up on it though. I am following the Yankees in the baseball though, lets talk about them and how they nailed the red sox.

I am a real American, I know whats right: Fight for your rights

You’re officially a fool Flano
I’ll take the bait

Only Fools and Horses was the ultimate comedy. It is character based with a script and with quality actors. It rarely bothered with the shock tactics as implored by The Office and Father Ted in particular (which is funny too) which is why it remained consistently funny after 15 years whereas the others had to stop after a few series because they ran their course. Its humour isnt about punchlines Bandage - it is actually very subtle - like Del’s unquestionable love for his Mum when she was, by all accounts, a slapper. Its humour is grounded in the character - as in ‘that is something Rodney would say’ which is why it lasted so long

I am not going waste my time arguing with fools (pun intended) who advocate the forced humour drivel last night over the brilliance of John Sullivan, David Jason et al. I know that humour is about opinions but that opinion is wrong…

Farmer, I didnt say I didnt like Only Fools and Horses, I only commented on how you know exactly whats going to happen before it happens 99% of the time. It’s still funny but the humour is diminished by the fact youve already thought ahead and know whats coming

How can you like something where you can predict the humour? I would love to sit down with you guys and actually watch an episode and see whether you can actually predict the humour - I would seriously doubt it.

And as I said the humour in Only Fools is not about the punchline usually - it is much more subtle.

I apologise for the onslaught but it pisses me off when people give out about the greatest comedy n TV programme of all time…

This all got very exclusive for a while - it was either Ted or Only Fools and Horses. I’ll join Sam in the both category. They’re very different but both excellent.

Ted is a bit more surreal/absurd. Stuff like “the feckin’ Greeks” is brilliant in my book. Just love random lines like that.

On the other hand the characters in Only Fools and Horses are something else. They were allowed to show real development and plots across episodes which, as Farmer suggested, lends itself better to having more episodes in more series over a longer period.

That said if they were both on tv for a half hour (and Bandage was looking after the site for the half hour to allow me to take a break) I’d opt for Ted.

Don’t get me wrong I rate Father Ted but I felt the third series was a series too far

The first bit of a series and second series were practically flawless. Every episode was an absolute classic. Maybe I am being harsh but I am judging it by its own highest standards…

Subtle my ass when you can tell what everybody’s going to say, what facial expression they’ll have, how the other people in the scene will react etc etc a good 15 seconds in advance each and every time. It’s old school crap for the common idiot who can’t grasp or understand subtle humour like The Office.

I have said what I had to say re OFAH so let that be it

Frankly I don’t care what some unemployed bum thunks…

Get a job as a TV critic if you think your opinion about a programme is more valid than everone elses. Fool.
