The first ever episode of Fr Ted on RTE 2 at the moment. Quality.
The first two series of that were utterly flawless but it took a nose dive in the third series.

Ah come on, you canāt call a show utterly flawless when it contains some of the most one dimensional characters in the history of television.
Dougal, Jack, Mrs. Doyle all poorly developed. What do they contribute but the same catchphrases over and over, all of which became tiresome quickly.
The show did incredibly well in spite of those characters rather than because of them.

I said it had two flawless series. I thoroughly enjoyed every episode of the two series. Then obviously the third series was a step too far with the standard of characters that they had.

How can the two series be flawless if they contain poor/one dimensional/flawed characters?
It wasnāt necessary to develop those characters due to the strength of the visual gags and the occassional/one-off characters like Len Brennan and Fintan Stack. Did the world really need to know more about Mrs. Doyle? Dougal was consistently hilarious anyway. Jackās not great but heād be good the odd time.
Because they were. You donāt need hugely developed characters to get two series of a sitcom out of them.
I actually found Jack funny most of the time (when he spoke) - Dougal not so much.

Fitzy knows the score, apart from Blackadder which I never got into.
I got Only Fools and Horses Series 1-7 about a month ago on DVD, had them before but lost them. The half hour episodes beat all other comedies out the door for me. Utterly brilliant - not a sitcom per se more like an hillariously funny drama with developed characters. The Christmas special To Hull and Back is as fine of an hour and a half of TV as you could hope to see.
It took a little dip in quality once the women came into it but maintained a pretty high standard up until 1996 where they got rich. The episodes after that were truly awful. Still that is some longevity.
Said it before but the first two series of Ted were flawless but the last wasnāt as good.
The first nine or ten series of the Simpsons was flawless also but again has dropped seriously in terms of quality.
I would include Fawlty Towers, Friends and The Office also as top comedies.
