Same old Brazil and Argentina too by that standard. It’s very difficult to break down a team who are content to sit deep and park the bus, especially at international level where attacking combinations are less established.
Argentina are fairly shite. Brazil were up against a much much better team
There’s very little difference in terms of bus parking ability between Iceland and Switzerland. Both are exceptionally well organised in that regard.
I thought Argentina were better than Brazil, actually. They at least showed more urgency and should have got a second penalty.
Tunisia were fairly inept and all England could manage was 2 goals from set pieces. Its like the Tunisians never heard of Harry Kane given the non existant marking. Their exit will be swift and painless once they reach the knock out stages.
Switzerland offer something when they have the ball. Its easier to park the bus when you can occasionally hold onto it for a while
England created a pile of good chances in the first half
Its a real uphill struggle for Tunisia now. I wouldn’t share your optimism about them making the knock out stages.
I don’t agree. It should be easier to break down a team who offer something with the ball, because by definition they aren’t parking the bus when they do that. Counter-attacking has generally been a major part of Brazil’s strategy for years now but that wasn’t in evidence last night.
Iceland went full blown Inter Milan 2010. Once they equalised, they weren’t interested in attacking. In their case, attacking introduces a variable they can’t control.
It was you that brought Brazil and Switzerland into the conversation mate. You’re kind of arguing against yourself here
Just in the door fully expecting 3 or 4-1 as the result. An injury time winner… Lolz. Who do England play next? Panama will do them.
How so?
Bringing on loftus cheek won them the game. Woy Hodgson finally did them some service
I think I took up your last post wrongly. I’ll continue where we were
You brought Brazil’s struggles against Switzerland into the conversation as a similar kind of game to England against Tunisia. Switzerland competed well for most of the game and had 46% possession. Tbh I was in the pub for the Argentina game so wasn’t fully immersed in it but it looked like they were getting chances to the end from what I could see. England had little urgency or chances in the second half in contrast. Iceland are also better defensively than Tunisia
A man that knows a thing or two about playing in a World Cup final, Dietmar Hamann very impressed with what he saw from England and expects them to make the semi finals.
England were good in the first half; poor in the second. Completely lacked tempo, until Loftus-Cheek came on and tried to make something happen, and it was his closing down that led to the corner.
Maguire is not good on the ball, and was on it more than most in advanced positions.
Tunisia looked awful in the first half, but settled. Didn’t really threaten in the final third. Khazri is a good footballer, with superb set-piece delivery but couldn’t get him on the ball in advanced positions.
I agree with sid, thought Argentina were much better than Brazil. Get pavon and banega starting and they’ll beat Croatia.
Thoughts:-
- The Tyrone man was commenting here at the start of the match but when it briefly looked like England might hammer Tunisia he took his first break from the thread since the stat of this tournament. The thread was far better without him.
- England were far better than the Irish commentators let on and far worse than the Brian commentators said. They should have won about 3-0 against probably the second weakest team in the tournament after the Saudis.
- Sterling looked class, don’t listen to the begrudgers. The English bench looks good. Maguire looked very good.
- Two Irish goals at the WC. Every true Irish man should cheer this team.
- Tactically they lack an overlap on the wings. That was a problem against a team whose main weakness is crosses. The idea of Maguire/ Walker charging up is interesting but not enough to fix this and the resulting gaps at the back will be exposed by the good teams.
- Southgate has been embarrassed once already with the Walker over Cahill call and will be exposed and embarrassed as a tactician again before this tournament is over. As far as I can see he’s just copied Terry Venables’ tactics from Euro96 and the Brits are calling him a genius.
Are you still drunk?
Fuck off you stupid bastard.
Suck my dick you CJD cocksucker
