I’ve not followed F1 much in the last few years, but I’m genuinely unsure why everyone is getting wound up that the lapped cars were shifted on. Its always been the case that if there is a safety car out, lapped cars move on and go back into normal track position. Is it because they announced this wouldn’t happen, which would be the real wrong here, or is it because the decision came so late on the safety car leaving that their is such acrimony?
The main thing about this, Mercedes said that this is exactly what would happen when the safety car came out.
So they expected the lapped cars to be shifted on, but now are moaning about it? It’s horrendous luck, a lead taken away due to a safety car deployment, but it happens the whole time.

The issue seemed to be they didn’t let all other cars pass. They only let 5 pass so there would be enough time for a last racing lap.

Usually all lapped cars are allowed through.
Massey said this wasn’t going to happen because the race hadn’t enough time left to do so.
They then allow some cars through whilst ending the SC when Max rolled up behind Lewis.
It’s a shitty enough call but if Mercedes had pitted Lewis once Latifi crashes they would have covered max somewhat.
But imo, even with new tyres Lewis was fucked as Max would have taken both out if he defended any harder.
He was fucked either way.

They were told no cars would be allowed overtake though so they kind of have a proper issue.

It’s the miscommunication that is a huge issue. Saying they won’t allow them unlap was wrong in the first instance
