He enjoyed a nice semi retirement commentating on his beloved St Mary’s College and the rest of the Leinster Schools Schools Cup in the 2000s when his son was CEO of Setanta.
Sports Stadium was a great show.
That iconic theme tune from Europe, Final Countdown. Fond childhood memories. Deferred top flight football matches shown at 3.30pm in full.
Different world back then, even though it’s not that long ago.
They were even live before the dastardly monster that is Sky came on the scene.
Ah that’s sad news all the same. For our vintage Fred will always hold a special place in the heart. Sports Stadium, ridiculously quaint concept in these days of globalized pay per view sports.
I received the following message from a mate yesterday evening.
‘RIP Fred Cogley, the voice of rugby before it became the favourite sport of absolute morons’.
Summed it up well I felt.
It was the favorite sport of absolute morons back in Fred’s time too as I recall.
What years was he presenting Sports Stadium? I would more associate it with Brendan O’Reilly.
O’Reilly was generally the main presenter.
My recollection is that Fred might have done an odd show as main anchor, as did George Hamilton, and possibly Michael Lyster, John Kirwan and Liam Nolan.
I don’t recall O’Reilly being involved much after the early 90s, maybe about 1992/93.
I think Jim Sherwin and Tracy Piggott mostly took up the slack in later years.
The programme ended at the end of 1997.
ORIELLY and Liam Nolan were the main two presenters
What’s Myles Dungan up to these days?
He’s History.
Sunday nights
20 years
a few people have asked me privately to flesh out my story of him on the plane
its pretty funny but now is not the time just yet
I thought it was a lovely interaction with Fred & just a nice story.
RIP. He seemed like a gent.
My main memory of him is from a neighbours house as a young child. I’d playing with the kids of my age while their dad would be shouting at a very loud TV with fred commentating in a different room during Irish 5 nations games. Memorable also as it was the only household on a road of 15 houses in suburban limerick city who were genuine limerick rugby people.
