Any time given to the cause is welcome. Family circumstances wouldn’t give me the time necessary to commit to being involved with teenage teams for 8 months of the year, but would allow me to tip away at one of those thankless jobs that need to be done in the background.

I found issue with the ‘that’s the way it’s gone these days’ line though. That’s not how it’s gone. There’s plenty doing the full amount and they no doubt could be at other things also but choose to be at this. It’s like a parent who’s too busy to make it to their kids games. The child may possibly be done with sport in 3-5 years and the parent will have all those wonderful memories of the time spent working to tide them over into their dotage.

The comment was more of a dig at myself in that I would be unable to give it the dedication needed to get involved in the team; fair play to all those who can and do go onto manage and coach young lads. I’ve nothing but admiration for them.

Didn’t a famous son of portarlington charge his own back in the day? after a few months and no progress was been witnessed he was approached and asked would it be ok if his fee was reduced? he duly obliged but increased the number of nights they trained thus costing the club more… lol lol
I’ve no idea about that to be honest, but the club were wrong to agree to pay an inside man, and then even more wrong to try and negotiate down a fee already agreed. In such circumstances, you’d be as well burn the thing down to clear out the vermin.

He’d be a foolish man to think that and will end up very short handed.
Is it the club is wrong to pay an inside man or is the inside man wrong to take payment from his own club? all clubs are paying managers and coaches now for donkeys ears, and if they think that an in-house man is the best then why shouldn’t he receive remuneration for his services. surely this rate would be considerably lower than the going rate and both parties would agree and be amicable.
The man is wrong to take payment. A good inside man will happily ask for the money to be ploughed into the set up and not him.
agree to a point but opinions may differ slightly… I cant understand how a club pay outside men to look after the first team, but expect the in house selectors involved with same to do it free and then coaches and managers of the lesser club teams receive nothing.
The GAA is a big massive contradiction and that’s why we all love it.
