There’s talk of financial clout from Banty’s end, and reading between the lines of Bannigan’s statement, the board are short on funds. Could be the perfect storm. I’d say the vast majority of supporters would quietly welcome Gallagher, even though the vast majority of the county hate Banty, for anti-immigration and likely envious motives.

Galway Senior Football Management Update
Galway GAA can confirm that Pádraic Joyce is stepping down as the Galway Senior Football Manager after seven years in charge.
Appointed to the role in October 2019 ahead of the 2020 season, the Killererin clubman has given stellar service over the past seven years to Galway Football as team manager. Under his leadership, Galway Football rebuilt consistency with the squad transformed into perennial championship contenders.
Pádraic re-established Galway as the standard bearers of the province, capturing four consecutive Connacht Senior Football titles (2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025). He also steered the Tribesmen to All-Ireland Senior Football Final appearances in 2022, their first final in 21 years and again in 2024. Before managing, Pádraic was one of Galway’s most prolific forwards during a glittering 15-year inter-county career.
We extend heartfelt thanks and genuine appreciation to Pádraic and his management team for their leadership, dedication, commitment and want to acknowledge the lasting impact they have made over the past seven years driving Galway Football forward to compete at the highest level.

No idea who gets that job. There is no outstanding local candidate that I can think of. So they could go outside the county. James Horan is involved with Moycullen but I don’t think he could bring himself to take the Galway job. Club is different.

To be fair to him he built on what Kevin Walsh done and got Galway back very close to the top. The most disappointing part was that each of the last 3 championships ended with them playing a boring, negative type of football that was at odds with how he played the game himself - he must have some regrets about that.

Wollie has his ear to the ground
Got too conservative in recent years and it probably cost them an All Ireland title against Armagh. I think he knew that too. Albeit they didn’t really change much. Still losing 2 All-Ireland finals narrowly was a lot better than what came before him. I think his reign will be looked on in a more favourable light with the passing of time.

He inherited the best underage team in 2 decades though. Comer and Paedo Welsh’s sides didn’t make the same impact as Ducky’s buachaillí. They were always going to step-up from Kev Welsh’s era with an actual panel. I think he held Galway back when a decent manager is beating Armagh in the 24 final.

Time may hide his failures. He achieved very little apsrt from a few handy Connaught titles. Beat Leitrim, Kildare and Westmeath this year. The defeats to Meath, Dublin and Armagh are a truer reflection of his tenure.

Pádraic will ultimately be adjudged a failure in the management stakes.
A super player in his day undoubtedly but the failure to get over the line particularly against Armagh will always be held against him.
The success of a moderate bunch of Rhubarbs this year must have been another dagger to the heart….Anyway he’s had a long innings and he can throw away the monogrammed runners and live his life.

He was a brilliant player. One of the very best,
But he wasn’t ultimately up to it as a manager.
Is Roy Keane’s playing record tainted due to his managerial record? Steven Gerrard? Frank Lampard etc etc?

Were Galway not shit before he took over? Comer and Walsh also missed a lot of matches over the years

To be fair to him he went in to the Armagh final with a half fit Walsh and a half fit Comer. Sean Kelly was injured and only came off the bench for the final 5 or 6 minutes. And Finnerty went off injured inside the first 10 minutes. It was a very bad hand to be dealt in a final. Even if Finnerty had stayed on he probably would have made the difference in a one point game. Joyce deserved criticism for things like leaving Walsh on the frees when he was wasn’t right and missed ones he would normally put over in his sleep. And he deserved criticism for not really moving on Galway’s style of play once the new rules came in. They were stuck playing what worked under the old rules.

We were, but it’s still viewed as a lost opportunity here in Galway. Some very talented players were playing dross stuff under him. It was a style totally at odds with the style that he played in maroon & white.
