There was some scéal about Snapchat and a young wan who was just of the age.
Given the calibre of player at PJ’s disposal then you’d have to say he underachieved with Galway overall. A plethora of recognisable and renowned footballers that would be known by most Gaels, not just Tommy Rooney niche stuff cc @peddlerscross. Walsh, Comer, Paul Conroy and Séan Kelly were marquee names. But the supporting cast of John Maher, Cein Darcy, Matthew Thompson, Rob Finnerty, Cillian McDaid, Dylan McHugh, Kieran Molloy, Liam Silke, Matthew Tierney and Johnny Heaney (pre-2025) were all players who’d performed to a high level at some stage too. That’s before you delve into the likes of the oft mentioned Peter Cooke, Fitzy, Cian Hernon, Mulkerrins who won Ireland’s got talent when Grainne Seoige was at her peak and useful subs like Tomo Culhane. The keepers Flaherty and Gleeson were one of PJ’s achilles heels along with his perceived lack of tactical acumen. You’d have to laud him in one way for bringing Galway firmly back to relevance but realise in the cold, light of day that they’ve wasted a serious generation of footballer.
He’d be fondly remembered as a great player but his ignorance and stubbornness as a manager prevented the county from making the most of what has been the best squad of players since. The number of players who fucked off from what appeared to be contenders is stark in itself. Thompson, Fitzy, Sice, Cooke all took time off. They’d have stayed if they thought there was a chance.
It’s calling for an Ulster manager to drive these lads to the summit.
A manager with a somewhat abrasive temperament, not overly concerned with what outsiders think of him and a knowledge of the machinations of county boards, club officials and talented players…
