To the economic historians on the board - am I right in thinking Sweden more or less had the same social / political reckoning in the 90s? - From what i gather it transformed Sweden economically for over 20 years but that has slowed in a big way recently …

What lessons can be learned here?

I’m no expert on economics, only Pearse really is within the party, but have Sweden, and other social conscience capitalists, fallen into the same mistake of trying to control inflation rather than spending? We need to allow banks print their own cash for periods of economic down turn to control spending — the central bank is the real enemy.

Families of post office workers literally had no food to put on the table.

My mother would often tell the story of how a priest came calling to houses in the area demanding £50 off each house at the time (how much would that be now)for some bullshit decorating job on the church.My auld fella was doing a bit of work around the house and told the priest in no uncertain terms where to go or he would find out what the pointy end of a graipe felt like and not to come back.A house full of children nearly starving and this cunt coming begging,he was never seen again.

Also - did the nordic model of housing that’s being promoted by PBP and Social Democrats etc. etc — did this not lead to a greater influx of immigrants? Sweden has a ridiculous amount of unemployed immigrants competing for social housing— and anti- immigrant rhetoric is high …

Serious planning needed if these far left idealists get their wish — we cant solve short term economic problems and create a host of social problems as a consequence.

was in 4th or 5th class around the time of the Postal Strike. There was a lad in my class whose Dad was a postman. My Mother (in the spirit of socialism) used to give me extra sandwiches and biscuits in my lunch for the postman’ s son. I (in the spirit of capitalism) used to give the postman’s son the sandwiches and eat the biscuits myself.

Jaysus, biscuits in with the sandwiches…it was well for you! I still cant eat a jam sandwich to this day.

There was a hunger strike march in Kilmallock. A few of the local FCA lads turned up in the uniform with the tricolour and were fucked out of the FCA after. Those hunger striker posters in black and white used to scare the shit out of me. Especially Patsy O’Hara.

Did any local mammies provide free sandwiches for the marchers?

I wasn’t. You had to be fairly blasè about your career prospects to engage in Republican activity. I signed the petition in Waterford and I was nervous enough about doing that. The Special Branch wouldn’t be long about letting your employer know that you were a republican troublemaker and not to be trusted. If you were spotted at any of these events you could say goodbye to a career in the army or the guards or the civil service.

That was still happening it 1998. They’d be waiting for you outside 44.

Them cunts had no problem landing into places and telling the employer where their staff were learning Irish during the week.

Pearse was one of the teachers back in the day. Only a young fella himself.

There was a four month postal strike in 1979. All business was done by post at the time. This lead to a huge back log in applications for the driving test. Minister Sylvester Barrett’s solution. A driving test amnesty. Anyone on a second or subsequent provisional licence got a full licence without having to take the test. This lead to 50,000 untested drivers being given a full licence.

Up to (I think)1964 you could go in off the street and buy a driving a licence, and that was it. It’s not surprising that the rate of road deaths was so high for so long.

To call him out would require calling out the small cabal of businessmen he made very rich, and who in turn made him very rich. Ireland’s version of the oligarchs. They still control the country so it’s unlikely anyone will look too closely anytime soon

Not alone that, but you could decide yourself what class of vehicle you’d like to drive. So my father decided he’d quite like to be able to drive buses and lorries if the humour took him
