Yesterday was proper opening game for a major piece of GGA infastructure. It also happened to be what is considered one of the biggest games of the year, which in itself should draw a crowd.

This wasn’t a soft opening with a couple of junior teams. I would expect the game along to bring in 20 odd thousand, even if it is in Cork. The tickets were priced from a max 30 euro down to kids of 5 euro. Sorry but that is very cheap (and the GGA should be admired for keeping prices low) for any event.

This shows a few factors at play;

1. Cork doesn’t have the transport connectivity to justify these big infastructure projects. Parking is an excuse being rolled out
2. Cork is a terrible place for events and the locals couldn’t be bothered
3. The GGA is losing interest- I’m not sure if attendances are up this year along but more or less attendances have been sliding for years

Pairc uí Caoimh will not be able to sustain itself without incluing some sporting events in the future by the look of this.

Pal, there was almost 11k at a second division club match there last week.

That’s probably more than the AIL gets in a whole season.

Why do Munster sell out some games and not others?

Because some games are against Zebre in the 2nd tier competitor and there isn’t any real interest in them.

This is the nub of the issue that we are exploring. Has interest faded away between traditionally close rivals to the extent that they couldn’t get a decent crowd yesterday

Tipp and Clare had an intense rivalry from 1997 to 2001. Attendances in that era would have been a blip. Yesterday’s attendance would have been well in line with historical norms.

The replay in 1999 at 3.30pm on a Saturday had an attendance of 34k

The IRFU aren’t putting 80m of Cap Ex into a stadium for the AIL ffs.

If you think that the GGA built that stadium for such a club game, come back to me at their next game there which isn’t a free look around the place event.

Look at the issues Thomond has had in sustaining itself. That cost 40m 10 years ago. Okay there is inflation on that but Cork have paid a significant amount more than that. I also know Cork managed to get 30m from the Government (which the GGA have already admitted was likely only because of the Rugby World Cup). But this is still a significant investment of funds. Where is the payback if they can’t get huge crowds for these types of games? They will probably get a similar number of bumper attendances per year for Cork games that Thomond does with Munster games, but probably with cheaper all round ticket prices. Have they sold their version of the 10 year tickets?

Just over 60k at this year’s QFs. Last year it was only 31,690. In 2015 33,150. In 2014 it was 43,088 but Tipp were involved there and Limerick. In 2013 it was 33,383… There’s 5 years data and this years QFs were up almost 20k on the best of the last 5 years.

The 1/4 finals were nowhere near full. Surely the GGA must be contemplating putting the semi-finals on there as Croke Park is barely half full for these games.
