Good Books

Shocking waste of a book title imho, surely Boomerang should be reserved for a forthcoming biography of Eddie Macken?

His earlier Liars Poker is the definitive insiders book on wall st

Has anyone read Skippy Dies? I’m considering purchasing it during the week.

Filth is a master piece. Only Welsh could pen a character like Bruce.

Could anyone recommend some decent reading material on the Spanish Civil War?

George Orwell’s book about his experiences during it is really marvelous. Homage to Catalonia it’s called.

beevors book and hemmingways for whom the bell tolls

I’d recommend The A-Z of The Spanish Civil War.

Vinny Jones’ Guide to the Spanish Civil War is also quite good.

That book is actually referenced in the current one I am reading which only has a couple of chapters on the Civil War. Wouldn’t mind reading into it more, looks like there are some very interesting stories to be told on it like Jospeh Sunyol’s death and the cover ups that went with it

Now that’ll make for some good reading on the jacks.

Anthony Beevor’s book is very good Puke, the prologue is among the best historical writing I’ve read. Its hard going, but rewarding. His description of the history of Spain and its influence on the war itself is excellent.

There’s one called ‘We Watched Spain Die’ or something similar which is a collection of writings from correspondents during the war, including Orwell I think. I wonder if there are any good ones on the blueshirt expedition, the shopkeepers’ sons clutching their rosary beads off to fight the godless communists.

Yeah it’s good alright. It’s hard to imagine anything written these days that would compare to what he was trying to do. It would be fantastic if someone did though. Notes From the Underground and The Gambler are decent reads as well. He likes his rants.

Has anyone read The Sun Also Rises? Great book I thought.

Orwell’s book is a nice easy read, I think I first read it when I was about 16 and I was even dimmer then than I am now. Don’t remember too much about it except that I loved it.
I also recommend listening to the song Spanish Bombs by the Clash, written in praise of the Republicans.

Ken Loach’s film ‘Land and Freedom’ is pretty good as well actually. Like a Spanish version of The Wind That Shakes The Barley.

I go through phases of what kind of books I read.
I was on a business buzz recently but have since moved on to a statistical/probability style phase. Kind of ended up there by accident after a few mathsy type business books (Freakonomics, Black Swan, Fooled by Randomness etc)

I used to read a lot of sports biographies but they are all completely shite now, then Republican Histories, then WW2 Histories.

Read Stalingrad recently and really enjoyed it. Might head back for a few more of them type books.

I read everything and anything, but I cannot stand fiction no matter how good.

I recently read Beevor’s book about the fall of Berlin in 1945, “Berlin the downfall”. A majestic work. Again you need to stick with it but well worth it. As is the Stalingrad book.
