Just got around to this last night. Enjoyable. He has some back catalogue. Solid 8/10. Should get around to some films from 2021 in 2034

I didn’t bother in the end.Watched WW2 in color instead on Netflix.
The size of the logistics/deaths/countries involved in that conflict were mind boggling. I never knew the Canadians had their own expedition force and a designated beach to invade on D-Day,for example.
I knew they were involved but I thought they were just put in with the Yanks and Brits.
I’d love to see something about any Irish involvement that day.Surely there’s a story or 2 to tell.

Everyone got shot to shit on D Day except the Brits. Got lucky I guess…

Yeah, rale lucky

Watching “out of Africa” with the mother there, I always break down crying when I hear this tune, John Barry was some composer

One of the greatest of all time

This is worth a look to show the distribution of deaths, genuinely difficult to comprehend the numbers.

More casualties on last day of WW1 (when they knew the armistice was a few hours away) than on D Day

That’s one of my favourite movie themes.

Mental

Watched When Harry met Sally on BBC 4 there last night for the nth time. It still is a super movie. I lolled numerous times.

I watched the new Leo Di Caprio movie on Netflix Don’t look up. It started out really good, a thinly veiled critique of the modern world and Trump etc. Then it got really unthinly veiled and was just a bunch of wank.

Not to be glib about it but the importance of DDay itself as an iconic event in the war and it’s role in popular culture in films like Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers has tended to exaggerate in the public mind the level of casualties suffered. The Allies landed 130,000 men on DDay and suffered 9,000 casualties (4,500 deaths and 4,500 injuries). A big number of casualties no doubt but relative to the numbers who landed reasonably light given the challenge involved.

I always used to presume casualties meant deaths. Wonder was there the same row about definition of casualties as there is about covid hospitalisations etc. Had he an underlying condition, did he die WITH shrapnel or FROM shrapnel??
