My rabbit hole today is Newcastle United (RIP) in the early Kevin Keegan era.
I think you’ll like this.
The context: Leicester need to win and hope Middlesbrough don’t win at Wolves to get promoted. Newcastle need to win at Ye Olde Filbert Street to ensure survival.
In the end, as it turned out even a Leicester win wouldn’t have been enough for promotion and a 1-1 draw would have been enough for Newcastle.
But nobody knew any of that, because they couldn’t hear their transistor radios.
The names to conjure with here are great. David Kelly. Liam O’Brien. Gavin Peacock. Franz Carr. Carl Muggleton*. Steve Walsh.
The pitch invasions at the end are great. The backpasses by Leicester are great because they’re soooo bad. The pitchside reaction by Kevin Keegan is great. The interviews are great. The realness of it all.
*If I get banned here again I’m going to start a new account called “Carl Muggleton”.
