Have a netgear wireless router
Don’t know how to put a password on it.
Looked at the netgear site a while back and it was all goobledeygook to me.
Any suggestions?
I’m assuming you want to change the password needed to connect to the router [and therefore the internet] and not to log in to the router to change settings on the router.
[This an important distinction]
Usually all you have to do is go to http://192.168.1.1 on a machine on that is connected to that router.
The username and passwords are usually very easy.
e.g.
Username:admin or administrator
Password:1234 or password
Once you are logged in to the router there should be an option in there to edit the network password.

I think I want to do the first thing you’re describing- ie I don’t want the neighbours using my connection- I believe they are scobing my bandwidth and causing me to get warnings from NTL either that or I am downloading way more than I thought.

In saying that, there are simple ways to get some details on who is connected to your connection. e.g. you can possibly see the computer name of people on your network. If they have named their computer e.g. johnmurphy-pc then they are caught out.

Ended up calling and speaking with “Steve” in Mumbai or wherever he was on the subcontinent because I couldn’t complete what I needed to just following the instructions above
All advice above was spot on except I needed to be connected by ethernet to the router in order to be able to change the wireless settings. All done and dusted.
Now I’ll probably be better able to see if its me that is using up all the bandwidth I’ve 20gb/month and I’d download about 3 or 4 movies a month plus a few albums which should only equate to about 6 or 7gb in total.
The rest would mainly be internet so I’d be surprised if its using up the 20gb.

You could also be uploading and using your allowace this way
Don’t think so as I only upload when downloading i.e. I immediately wipe all movies from my hard drive transferring them to an external hard drive once the movies are downloaded. I also limit my upload speeds to 5kb a min.
Surely that’s a second? Or you’re very scabby.
Web browing used a bit of upload as well as download but 20Gb seems alot for 4 movies if they’re all divx or whatever. If they’re DVDs then 20Gb would be about right.
If you are in an apartment block with an open Wireless connection people are more than likely going to use it.
I remember back in 2004 I was living in Boston and we lived beside a high school with unprotected wireless broadband.
5 months of free broadband.

Second it is… do you think I could limit upload to 5kb a min?
Most of the movies would be DVD Rips and are about 750-800mb
Albums would be about 120mb. So I reckon 4x1gb (at most) x2 (assuming it uploads on a 1:1 ratio which it never would)+ a few albums would get me to around 10gb. I’d be surprised that the net would use the other 10gb to be honest. Ah well I’ll see what happens. Will try to speak with someone tomorrow to see if they can give me my bandwidth usage since I password protected the other day

No, what you can do is set it to 1kbps on each individual downloads.
