Hurling League 2018

You’re either right, or you’re wrong wrong wrong.

I feel a bit sorry for Davy.

People always find a “yeah but” when he achieves anything.

Yeah but it was a soft All Ireland.

Yeah but it was the U21 management who deserve the credit.

Yeah but you ran the shit out of the non LIT players on your squad.

Yeah but you’re the only county training hard in winter.

Etc etc.

But Davy Fitzgerald has been making Wexford people happy since October 2016.

I absolutely adore the man. We need to live in the now and enjoy any and all victories, I think.

I think Davy and Wexford were a match made in heaven. He came into a team who realised they were a long way below the required level and willing to put in the work to get up to where they needed to be. They are a team without egos and that’s exactly where Davy thrives.
I also think the fact that Wexford have a small enough pool to pick from suits Davy down to the ground, as he can work on what he has. Some of the progress made by fringe players has been phenomenal. I think it’s underestimated how much a lack of hurling can be made up for by being super fit.
I would have had Wexford as prime candidates for the drop at the start of the year so to have safety more or less secured already is a brilliant achievement.
I hope he has something left in the tank for the summer, but ye should have plenty to come out in the top three of Leinster anyway. After that who knows.

Interesting that Derek McGrath seems to have absolutely zero interest in the league this year. He doesn’t give a fuck if they are relegated by the looks of it as he won’t be there next year. All out for one last tilt at the AI.

Everyone says they have the prettiest wife at home etc but I think we actually have very good talent available in Wexford and that gets overlooked quite a bit. All our notable victories under Davy have generally been ascribed to supposed greater fitness rather than good play, skill, tactics, leadership, composure or whatever. I accept that (apart from Kilkenny in Leinster last year) most of the good wins came in February-April but I sense a bit of snobbery. People don’t like to think that Wexford are better than them. Oh, what’s that? Yes, it’s just down to fitness. We needed a very good manager to get the most out of the talent pool and to get everyone pulling in the right direction though.

It’s a dangerous game to be playing, a team could tailor their training to peak at certain times in the past but with the new format this year no team knows how best to play it.

Derek strikes me as a man who does some serious overthinking. He could be caught out trying to be too clever.

Thanks be to God that will never happen to us anyway. Not the limerick way.

Get it and hit it. No need for anymore thinking than that

I think the hurlers available to Davy very much suits his style of hurling. Plenty of big powerful athletes who can cover ground and win ball.

He has then fit, organised and pulling in the same direction which is half the battle. Will be interesting to see if Wexford could win a Leinster or get to an A/I semi final this year as aside from 2013 his teams have struggled with taking that step from being solid, hard to beat outfits to sides who can beat the big teams on the big days.

Good chance at a Leinster this year. KK in transition and Galway are still on the beer

Will you go way out of that Joe you rogue

Everything’s was got soft in 13, just one of those years, if Limerick had a free taker they’d have won it, if Ryan O’Dwyer hadn’t been sent off Dublin probably would have, if the ref blew up when he should have Cork would have

Well done mate on Corks almost All Ireland

It would have been unbelievably soft,

Thats usually when ye won them.

Mate, I wouldn’t worry much, I’m a grown man and luckily my county has won a fair few in my lifetime,
13 would have been the least deserved if they managed it, well beaten by Limerick, should have lost to Dublin and probably slightly second best to Clare the first day,

Beating kk in leinster should not ever be underestimated. It still takes balls, strength and skill to beat those lads at anytime more do in the championship.
This round Robin will throw up some odd results.
Wexford will be hard beaten by anyone, which is all you could ever ask as a supporter.
Possibly lack a bit of speed, I’m not sure.
Cork will be an altogether different proposition for anyone on a dry day with a firm pitch I’d reckon.
It’s shaping up to be a fantastic summer.

Wexford will shit themselves the next time they play Limerick.

These conditions hardly suit him to be fair, but there are other players in better form… He’ll need to improve to make the team. Competition for places is what you want though, and God knows he’s talented enough.
