It’s grand tonight. Not too many tourists around.
Still no sign of my smoked cheese
It’s shocking. Like as in, I think you kinda go into shock.
I’ve read a couple of books about the place and had some knowledge of what happened but it’s still just horrific to see it. They have massive piles of human hair and children’s shoes…
What I found shocking were the drawings on the wall in the kids block in Birkenau. I’ve been there 4 or 5 times over the years. It doesn’t get any easier.
I could never fathom that.
The crates and crates of children’s shoes…
There’s a room in the Israel house exhibition that’s just the children’s drawings, from there? Drawings of things the children have seen like soldiers murdering families. It’s haunting.
No. In some huts to the left of the railway tracks at Birkenau. There also are some photographs on display of the railway platforms and the selections of prisoners taken by a Hungarian prisoner and smuggled out. Awful.
I remember some of those photos. Nazi officer standing there pointing left and right and pointing women and children and small babies to their death. Utterly depraved.
People don’t understand that this stuff is on a curve and once you start down it the next level of wrong is more easily justifiable and it keeps getting worse. It starts with alienating or demonising a set of people, proceeds with treating them differently and taking away rights and then it’s a short hop to killing them. The israelis are a long way down that curve with the Palestinians.
The children smiling for one of the photos, presumably innocent of what’s about to happen and are just seeing a camera for the first time…that’s one I won’t forget in a hurry
