Shockingly Anglo-centric list. They count 1966 as a “moment”?
I didn’t actually have a look through it before I posted the link up Sid, but fuck me, you are correct. Apparently, according to the Independent, the 5th most memorable moment in World Cup history is a David Platt goal.
Obviously this is the last time I’ll ever read the english Independent. I apologise for any inconvenience or trauma caused.
Check the photo they have for the Platt goal against Belgium. It’s a picture of Stuart Pearce’s last second disallowed free kick against Holland.
One of the Poms in work sent me the Sun’s greatest world cup XI team today, it included someone called Diego Maradona, who apparently led his country to triumph in 1990.
Not relevant to the thread, but anyway - yesterday morning Adam Spencer on ABC Sydney local radio played Put em under Pressure, Ireland’s official 1990 World Cup song. I stood crying in the kitchen as I made me sandwiches listening to it.
Andy Harper (former auusie footballer) on the same programme yesterday “England have always been of the opinion that the world cup is their’s to lose. In this respect, they have always overachieved”.
do people still eat sandwiches? ffs
crying over a song?ffs
listeing to abc ? ffs
