"The OC"

A drama series aimed mainly at teens but also accessible to adults seeking a guilty pleasure.

In post-troubles South Armagh, Brick Murphy is the leading figure of the local “movement” - liked and respected by all, a pillar of the community. Through his role as a community leader, he is introduced to a kid from the wrong side of the tracks (West Belfast) named Ryan, who has run into some trouble, and Brick and his wife Christine give Ryan refuge by taking him to live at their palatial home near Crossmaglen.

Ryan is instantly attracted to the girl next door, Marisa Coulter, and the two begin a protracted on-off romance. Marisa is going through her own troubles as rich interloper Caleb McNicholl has torn apart the marriage of her parents Julie and Jimmy. But the two instantly become soulmates.

Ryan also strikes up a friendship with Brick’s son Stefan, who is a bit of a smartarse. Stefan pursues a romance with another neighbourhood girl, Samhradh.

Ryan proves surprisingly good when he is drafted in to play for the local football team, but gets involved with a few local hoodlums, and finds it difficult to escape his past in West Belfast.

Ryan, Marisa, Stefan and Samhradh get up to all sorts of exciting mischief in the rolling countryside of South Armagh. And they love hanging out at the local coffee shop in the square in Crossmaglen, “Jamie’s”, and Paddy Short’s Music Bar, where all sorts of hip local musical acts, such as The 4 Of Us, Ash, Therapy?, The Corrs, Two Door Cinema Club, David Holmes, Marty Mone and Big Tom play on a regular basis.

Occasionally they even venture to noted regional nightspots such as the Canal Court in Newry or The Glenavon in Cookstown. In one episode they even venture down to Mexico - Dundalk, to be precise, when Marisa puts herself in serious danger when she gets too drunk.

And the series 1 finale occurs when the gang follow their beloved Armagh football team all the way down to Dublin for an All-Ireland final against Tyrone - and all hell breaks loose on the train back. This episode features a shared plotline with the series finale of season 3 of “Red Hand Lights”, which is referenced in post #2 of this thread, with some of the “Red Hand Lights” characters making guest appearances.

The climax of the show occurs when Marisa has to decide whether to stay in Crossmaglen with Ryan or move away to pursue her dream university course at UUJ.

And tragedy strikes.
