Ireland politics (Part 3)

I should have added that the modern EU is 100% set to the benefit of tbe German economy with it’s large exports. We’re thriving despite it but the house always wins.

I don’t know
I wasn’t around before 73 but Ireland was an awful lot more grim in the 80s

We joined single currency 25 years ago. There’s far more money in country now than then. By any metric it’s been a big success - low interest rates, low inflation. We have record exchequer numbers and no unemployment with single currency. We are struggling with building infrastructure and massive population growth beyond any forecasts.

How would you sell your energy from outside the EU. You say we could negotiate to stay in trading bloc but outside the EU. I don’t see anyway that’s allowed and there’s no precedent for a country leaving and managing that never mind one this small.

We unpegged from sterling in 1979 and it led to 15 per cent interest rates and massive unemployment and a decade long recession. It also allowed corrupt politicians and their cronies make a killing on fx bets. We were completely
Exposed to market speculation on the punt and paid a high price.

Mortgage rates are indicative. EMU started in 1994 in earnest. If we left Euro tomorrow most of the country would be facing mortgage rates multiples higher and in immediate

Full employment is a completely empty stat.

Especially when people cant buy anything with their wages…

I don’t agree at all. And that’s why i referenced 1980s and 15 per cent unemployment.

People generally have a very high living standard in Ireland and perhaps in some cases unrealistic expectations. I do accept cost of living - housing and grocery prices and energy - needs addressing but we will manage that better within euro and EU.

We have a 14% youth unemployment rate

We compare very favourably on that metric

That’s a staggering chart.
No wonder some countries want to bring back in youth conscription.

And youth unemployment is circa 15%…

Came to the party a bit late with this stat! :fearful:

Spot on. Full employment is counting people doing a few part time hours a week too.
You can work 60 hours a week here earn a decent wedge on paper but try buying a house?
In the poverty 80s a house wasn’t 20 times the average wage, it was probably less than 3 times.

Like brexit?

Oh look, the EU is going to fuck paddy harder with what can only be described as price fixing

The EU EV tariffs will be removed or reduced if Chinese manufacturers agree to increased prices that make EU manufacturers prices look reasonable

The European Commission issued a document outlining how Chinese exporters can submit price undertaking offers, which it said must be “adequate to eliminate the injurious effects of the subsidies and provide equivalent effect to duties”. It added that it would amend its existing regulations if it accepts such offers.

When will the Irish mainstream media report and inform Paddy as to what’s going on here?
EU is adding tens of thousands to the price of Chinese EVs because European manufacturers are dinosaurs.

Illegal cartel like behaviour by the EU -
paddy! lube up and pay

Is the UK still in the EFTA numb nuts?

Sure Paddy has been happy to pay VRT for years - a car in Germany is a lot cheaper than in Ireland.

Because the EU is predominantly to benefit the German economy

VRT benefits our exchequer and the wasteful political class, the EU does not care about Irish citizens exhorbitant motoring costs as they have never challenged VRT, instead we have spoofers rushing in AI laws and attacking social media companies to keep us distracted from the persistent thievery.

Also, note how EU & Irish politicians screamed Trump was destroying free trade with his tariffs, at the exact same time our politicians were agreeing to EU tariffs of 35% on Chinese EVs - ‘quick, look over there while we fuck you’

Now sweating over the hypocrisy of their 35% tariffs they have a new way to fuck you - minimum pricing - this is EU price fixing ( Commission issues Guidance Document on submission of price undertaking offers for battery electric vehicles from China - Trade and Economic Security ) at the expense of consumers - Qui Bono?

Ireland is a high consuming economy, largely in line with the OECD when distortions are removed.

Low unemployment absolutely makes a difference, I look forward to when that turns the other way and you start moaning about the reverse.

I believe the Buswell’s carvery has seen a significant improvement since Green representation decline and Independent Ireland’s increased.
