You have to know where your other defenders are. It was simply impossible for Duffy to play offside from where he was.
Doherty was switched off. 100%. He didn’t have his body square to where the ball was coming from. He was facing forward. He was in no position to defend.
If you play offside, you still face the ball and at least give yourself a chance to get back
I don’t think anyone is creaming themselves. People are encouraged however and with reason. Ireland were easily the better team tonight. Could and should have gone their way with a bit of luck. . Kick them when they’re gash by all means if you must, but to do so after how they played tonight is telling
Agreed, but from Doherty’s starting position, he can see that Duffy is in that position (which obviously gives Braithwaite the space to attack). Doherty starts to go but then just gives up when a burst of acceleration might have been enough to just put him off.
Now, pretty much the opposite happens for our goal. Braithwaite doesn’t go with Doherty who times his run perfectly.
And if Doherty had shouted to push up? What ever way you slice it for me Duffy is in no mans land. At least Doherty was on line. His positioning was poor but I don’t think it was his fault 100 percent. Nobody closed down the cross either.
You’re bang on there. Way too much time to get head up and pick the run and then the pass. They’d only one player on the pitch capable of that pass and yet he was afforded way too much time and space
I always find in field sports there is usually a heap of reasons why you concede a score. I think there’s at least 3 players at fault. Doherty seems to be getting a lot of shit from Irish fans.
Cut out at source, the defenders being blamed don’t have to make a decision. He still may have made that cross if under pressure. But may have needed another touch which could have been enough to change the read of both defenders or attacker overrun it
