The FAI and the government are at loggerheads again after Shane Ross, the minister for sport, slammed a move to draft in former employee Noel Mooney to run the embattled organisation.
Ross said the secondment of Mooney from Uefa on a ātemporaryā basis was retrograde, claiming that it has left public confidence at ārock bottomā.
He slammed the move to parachute in Mooney as general manager without holding a selection process. The outburst by Ross casts doubt over state funding for the FAI.
Ross, through his department and Sport Ireland, suspended all grants in March after revelations of a secretive ā¬100,000 bridging loan given by John Delaney to his employers in 2017.
Mooney is a close ally of Delaney, the former chief executive sent on gardening leave by the FAI six weeks ago. He described Delaney as an āinspirationā when moving to Uefa in 2012.
Two years later Mooney has changed his tune by talking of radical reform. Ross clearly has no faith in him.
āMooney of the old regime was anointed, an FAI loyalist to his fingertips,ā he wrote in the Sunday Independent . ā[He] may have many talents, but he is one of the last people on Godās earth suitable for this job. There is no going back for the FAI. Going to Noel Mooney is going back to the dark ages. We objected in no uncertain terms in a tense, face-to-face meeting with the FAI.ā
While Ross recognises Fifaās aversion to government meddling, at risk is up to ā¬5 million per year in state funding. Projects such as the Dalymount Park rebuild and a floodlight upgrade for Lansdowne Road to host four matches at the Euro 2020 finals are under threat.
Preston midfielder Alan Browne is out of Irelandās squad for the Euro 2020 qualifiers against Denmark on Friday week and Gibraltar three days later after injuring his calf in Portugal.
Colleagues.
As you are aware mediation talks were held last week but despite almost 5 hours of talks no resolution was forthcoming. This is frustrating as our branch does not want to hurt the innocent clubs and players in our league who are now drawn into this dispute. In order to resume the season we have offered to operate as a trio for all the remaining fixtures of the club (has worked in other leagues) or will return as normal if the names on the match card from the night of the assault are stood down for the remainder of the season or until the guilty party is brought forward. These have been rejected by the MC who want us to return with a club committee member and a league committee member at all games to ensure our members safety. In a final gesture of goodwill the assaulted referee has waived his right to take any legal action against the guilty party and is happy to have him dealt with by the football authorities only. We stand steadfast beside our colleague who suffered this assault and are aware that it could have happened to any one of us.
As the mediator is working on this case in the background we will not comment further other than bring you this update.

All seems reasonable enough to be fair. A league committee member at each game cunts milking every crisis
Thereās a meeting tomorrow night I think.
If itās not sorted tomorrow Iād say the season will be cancelled.
How many Abbeyfeale lads are on the board?
Just FN iād say.
What role has he in there? I presume thatās 95.7% of the problem. If it was anyone else theyād be fucked out and no more about it, and rightly so.
PRO in Desmond League and Vice Chairman of Abbeyfeale. He represented Abbeyfeale during the investigation, which is all kinds of wrong!
Assume there was no positive news from the meeting last night?
Committee wanted to abandon the season, clubs were protesting this. That was the last I heard. It was still ongoing.
Season over it seems.
Next season could be in bother too.
Gas bastards
Whatās Abbeyfealeās reluctance to suspend the people allegedly involved in the assault on the ref? Are they well connected within the club or merely denying the accusations made?
Fairly easy to end this impasse. Hefty bans for those involved. The refs are dead right here by the sounds of it and I hope they stand their ground.
