Jon Walters almost defined teams of that era. Severely limited in many ways in comparison to top class players but always seemed to play above himself in the green jersey and rarely had a bad game for Ireland. He looks like a superstar in comparison to the team we have now

Had a quick look at the play-off permutations.
Itâs a very very slim hope at this stage.
Croatia losing to Turkey at home and Poland losing to Albania in Tirana are probably the two fateful results that will seal our fate.
We need 2 more groups to go our way. The only real chances are:
Israel to leapfrog Romania. They are currently 4 points behind but still have to play them. Israel also have Andorra to play, while Romania play Switzerland. If the Swiss beat Romania and presumably Israel beat Andorra, then thatâs a winner-takes-all match.
Elsewhere, Iceland would need a miracle to overtake Slovakia realistically. They still have Slovakia to play but also have to play Portugal away, while Slovakia also have Bosnia. Also, Iceland are not very good.
But I think they are our only two remaining hopes really, and we need both to come in. Poland getting ahead of Albania is the only other chance but Albania still have the Faroes to play so itâs pretty much impossible, as they only need a point to secure a place.
Never great to be relying on other teams really; could we have done better in the Nations League to have given ourselves a better chance? Had we got a win over Ukraine in Dublin, weâd be getting a play-off spot for sure.
