Irish youths soccer

Under 21s drew 1-1 with Montenegro today in a Euro qualifier. Not a great result at all.

From accounts elsewhere Conor Powell, O’Dea, Gibson and Keogh were decent.

Team was:
Republic of Ireland: Supple; Nolan, O’Cearuill , O’Dea, Powell; Gibson, O’Toole (Best, 60 mins), Stokes, Clarke (Scannel, h/t), Quinn, Keogh

Under 19s lost 0-3 to France, also at home. Team for that was:
Shane Redmond - Nottingham Forest
Michael Spillane - Norwich City
Danny Earls - Aston Villa
Laurence Gaughan - Celtic
Garry Breen - Manchester City
Kurtis Byrne - Hibernian
Michael Daly - Manchester City
James Berrett - Huddersfield Town
Donal McDermott - Manchester City
Paul Cahillane - Celtic
Ian Daly - Manchester City

We have really shit results at underage levels these days.

Wexford’s Paul Murphy put Ireland 1-0 up against France in the U-17 European Championships earlier today but they ended up losing 2-1 to a last gasp goal.

Is that because of disagreement with IFA? If so its a disgrace.

no amond? thats a pity

How’s Owen Garvan doign these days? They expected big things of him after his first season at Ipswich but I think he got some kind of a virus after that and was out for a long time.

Think Gibson has just been left out, probably injury that hasn’t been reported yet because he’s been on the bench for United in the EPL. Nothing to do with the IFA stuff as far as I know.

Garvan is back to form I think. He was held-up by a sickness alright but he’s over that now. Garvan, McCarthy and Gibson are three very good central midfielders to have at that level and that’s a key position for us to develop.

Glad to see Sheridan getting into the squad. He’s had a terrible run of injuries with Celtic and missed most of the pre-season which is a pity because Strachan clearly likes him.

Surprised how few of those I’ve heard of.

Looking up the page above we have a fairly miserable record at bringing through young players. There’s an Under 19 team mentioned above, some of whom are familiar but none of whom have made any sort of impact in professional soccer really.

I try and follow the underage teams as much as I can but I too know hardly any of those lads. About 5 maybe.

Of that U-19 above, I know Berrett has done well at League 1 level and Huddersfield have just signed ex-Man City man Donal McDermott, he’s a good player for the future if he stays injury free. Don’t know much about most of the rest. Ian Daly went to Cyprus or something? I’d say most of the rest are knocking around the lower leagues/LOI?
I’m not sure what the answer is…maybe more of them should stay home? Certainly Daniel Kearns had the right idea leaving West Ham for the LOI rather than going playing for Hartlepool or somewhere. He’s linked with a move back to England now. Player improves with first-team games rather than reserve team football. Seems simple enough, really.

While the domestic league attracts plenty of warranted criticism the standards of coaching look to be much higher than they were years ago. Obviously the playing standards have a bit of catching up to do but I think it’s certainly possible to develop as a young player in the Airtricity League. It’s not too long since there was a perception that if you were still in the league at 20 then you were finished.

Ian Daly is back playing with St Pat’s these days.

Irish U 19 matches:

v Greece Wednesday, 7pm;
v Czech R Saturday, 5pm; (on Eurosport)
v Romania Tuesday, 5pm

A goal after 2 minutes but the Greeks equalised two minutes later. Half hour gone. Disappointing lack of hype about this game, particularly given the potential for IMF related puns.

Ireland have gone 2-1 up. Replica start to this half - O’Connor has scored his second of the night.

7 minutes left, would be a great result if we held out. The Czech’s are 2-1 up against Romania as well

Yes, people should really get with the Programme.

This would be a good result. Is this tournament being televised?

Czech’s now 3-1 up against the hosts

Eurosport. Highlights of tonight’s game later (I think) and they’re showing our second game live on Saturday.

Czech won 3-1, looks as though we are going to hold out for the three points

Full Time

Greece 1 Republic of Ireland 2

Paul Doolin we love you
