Is Rafa Benitez gone?

While this is a development I would love most days of the week(and predicted preseason), I’m not too keen at present. Originally I hoped it would be another nice step on Liverpool’s efforts to match United’s 26 years without a league(just 9 more to go) with too many Spaniard’s at the club for a new manager, leading to a small clear out followed by bringing in some of his own men while being slightly Hesselinked by the new owners’ financial constraints. This might eat up a few valuable years. However, with Jose being available and looking for a job in England, I think that a worst case scenario could see Jose become a scouser which would make me utterly hateful. I know he likes London and has a no english jobs for a year deal but it might be his style to hand back some cash, profess his utter love for Liverpool(‘I’ve always been impressed by their fans passion and thievery’). If I can be promised this won’t happen(significantly, neither Hicks nor Gillette took my calls last night) I’d be delighted for the goatee to be fucked out on his ear.

Do you fear Mourinho then Juhniallio?

It was like Le Guen last year at Rangers. It was so much fun watching them giving their tendency to self-implode on a regular basis under him but then they got so bad that I was wondering if it might be good if they went on a winning run for a while so that he’d get a stay of execution. Then the fool went and dropped Barry Ferguson and made Gavin Rae captain and I knew his days were numbered.

What does Hesselinked mean in that context? I’m a fan of puns as much as anyone but can’t quite work that one out.

My guess is ‘hamstrung’.

Hesselinked means hamstrung. If you knew your Celts it wouldn’t have been a problem. You need to spend more time on the Huddleboard.

Yes Bandage I fear Mourinho. Mostly because he’s a shit hot manager. But particularly because of the timing. A good manager right now might turn them round to a good season. I’d be quite Roy on them going through a period of turmoil with debt and stadium costs rising while results and attendances went saarf. The impact of the credit crunch sees them pull a northern Rock and hey presto, Liverpool become a Leeds Utd. Now if Stevie G could just get banged up for GBH, I’d be delighted.

See my post above re Hesselink. Liverpool are already looking to refinance* the loan they took out last year to build a new stadium as the cost projections have been revised significantly upwards. I don’t envisage the owners giving Benitez a huge wad of cash in January given this and the raft of funds they provided him with in the summer. As there’s still one or two gaps in their squad (primarily centre half cover) I don’t think a title challenge will materialise this season.

  • I would worry about any entity who has to refinance in the current climate. They could be the next Leeds.

This is smashing talk about the credit crunch on a soccer thread. Football clubs need guys like us in the corridors of power. Celtic are in a very secure financial position these days due to their low debt. United are in huge debt too though so any problems with backers might affect them too.

As for the Benitez issue - I still think he should be a decent manager. Not sure why he’s not 100% succeeding but he has certainly improved Liverpool and if I was a United fan I think I’d be happy to see the back of him. Paul Le Guen was a different kettle of fish entirely because he was laughably bad. Annoying as it was when they finally sacked him it was so worth it to see Gavin Rae skippering them. A real high point last season.

Sorry about missing the hamstrung link - no excuses.

I have to disagree wholeheartedly with your assessment of Benitez Rock. He may have done exceptionally well in Europe but his league record is pretty poor all told. His football is more often than not very functional and uninspiring. And they tend to struggle when having to take a game to the opposition. The uneasiness between himself and Stevie Geebag and the owners is great and must affect performances. I know Clarkey and BAndage argued that Liverpool fans don’t mind him but the ones I know(sneaky G and Noelie C in particular) are not happy with the football being played and the lack of progress. Long may it continue and let’s hope they re-sign Fowler in January.

Liverpool co-Chairmen George Gillett and Tom Hicks have today released the following statement.
"Despite speculation in today’s newspapers, there is nothing new to say.

"We had a good win yesterday and have got some very important games coming up starting with Porto on Wednesday, followed by Bolton and Reading, before Marseille and Manchester United in a few weeks.

“Both of us, together with Chief Executive Rick Parry, plan to meet with Rafa when we come over mid December to make decisions on the team’s requirements at that time.”

Yeah, I totally accept Benitez and Le Guen are completely different cases seeing as Benitez has won the premier trophy in club football while at Liverpool. Was just looking at it from the perspective of supporting a rival team where you’re satisfied that you’re better than them (like Celtic when Le Guen was at Rangers and from Juhniallio’s perspective with Manchester United and Benitez’ Liverpool) and you’re revelling in anything bad that’s happening but you’re not sure how bad you should hope it becomes in case they replace the manager with someone better.

Fowler wouldn’t be a bad shout - look how well it worked for United when they got Larsson last year. This is the next level up of player again so he’d surely bang them in relentlessly.

I think Benitez has done well. There may well be disquiet but I don’t think they have a divine right to be any better than they currently are. Improvements must be strived for and expected over time but there’s been definite progress in Benitez’s time there and I don’t see how or why that would stop now.

The only reason Benitez may leave is this clash of personalities but if Benitez, Stevie G and the owners conspire to cause enough trouble for themselves that they can’t work together then none of them should be involved in that level of football anyway.

Sounds to me like he has 5 games to save his job. And they need to win them all. The big ones are the champions league cos’ those guys like their balance sheets but if they don’t beat reading and Bolton their league chances will look poor and pressure will mount. Losing to Man U will make them (H+G) relise* Liverpool are still a level below and they’ll take action.

I think Benitez’s goatee was an obvious two fingers in the face the world’s most famous razor producer and its continued existance is the largest source of friction at the club.

This started out as a typing error but I now realise that the meaning of ‘realise with relish’ might render this a new word.
That or realish.

Not bad - I can see its uses. “As the defender lost his footing at a crucial time I realished I was through on goal.”

Or “As Wraven failed to provide any evidence to the contrary (despite much help) I relised he was out of his depth in the argument.”

Real lost 1-0 to Villarreal tonight. Will do well to see out 2015

Where does he live now?

Says he’s moving closer to home.

His Family lives in Liverpool

He has a walk away clause if Newcastle are relegated.

Pity Mourinho isn’t still managing in the league to rise the fuck out of the fat fucker.

he’s far too big for the Newcastle job, he must be getting serious coin for the gig
