Italia 90 Nostalgia thread

Yes. And in good form at the time.

Peyton?

I dont think he would have become half the legend if his name was pronounced correctly.

He was definitely 90 but id say was gone by 94

I’d say he had retired then.

They only brought two keepers to USA94 as far as I know.

Liechtenstein would have hammered us only for Kelly.

:weary:

He got the ultimate legend status of ‘who do you think you are packie bonner?’ if a fella made a good save around then or wore goalie gear.

Google shows Payton was still active for Ireland up until 1992.

Gerry Peyton

Packie was some man to grit his teeth before kicking the ball out…

He was brilliant in the euros

Meh, shoulda stopped Kieft

There’s a reason why Bonner spent his entire career at Glasgow Celtic in the League of Scotland. Not good enough for the step up to league football in England, even in the 2nd or 3rd division.

Donegal people would have a deep bond with Glasgow Celtic . Other such areas would be Sligo , Leitrim and Achill Island . Emigration a huge factor

The Martin O Neill years and relative success , the Peace Process and the Sky Sports McFootix craze helped grow the franchise in Ireland . Packie Bonner was a huge factor too .

@rocko was a massive influence in lads supporting Celtic too.

The spike in numbers in accountants and lads working in the International Financial Services Centre following Glasgow Celtic presumably would be a much more recent phenomenon, than your traditional North West of Eire emigrant to Glasgow?

Celtic is an Ulster and North Connacht club.

Ireland Italy on here on eirsport. Pat Bonner stumbling around like a drunk after parrying Donadonis shot and Toto taps in.
