Johnson is obviously a buffoon but he was dead right about the World Cup being Russia’s version of the 1936 Olympics.
This being the second one after the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Putin is ultimately wumming his own people. He’s another con man. Making enemies and playing the nationalist card for all it’s worth might help shore up support at home but he’ll ultimately run Russia into the ground if he keeps this up. He hasn’t diversified Russia’s economy and they’re heavily dependent on fossil fuel exports. The average salary has plummeted since 2014. He’s isolated them diplomatically and the shit will really hit the fan if Russian assets abroad start getting frozen. There will be a reckoning at some point. That’s probably a good while away yet but it will come. Dictators have a nasty habit of coming unstuck in the long run.
