Here we have it in Ireland, just in Ireland, our sport, our game unique to the world, hurling.
A game thousands and thousands of years old. One time it was used as a substitute to battle. Rather than regions, localities and later parishes going to battle they hurled instead, within the game, that might have gone on for weeks, maybe things were resolved and maybe the embers of new miffs or beafs were created, to be resolved for the next day on the the field. Rivalries grew and so did respect.

Hurling is now what it is today. To a foreigner they say, oh gosh the sticks, itā€™s very rough, do you not get hurt with the stick? When itā€™s explained to them that as little boys and little girls they play and are told and know themselves inherently not to hit their opponent with it or use it as a weapon. The hurley is the conduit that puts the sliotar in the net or over the bar, not a weapon to hurt your opponent. Children understand this are learn the skills taught to them over years and years and become tough and hardy individuals with pain thresholds adapted from years of training and well able to take a crack of the hurley now and then. This of course is the the status of the elite hurler.

You train and play on a team, any team, you are an elite hurler who has a lifetime of training behind you. Club or county, high level or low level you are an elite hurler trained in the skills of hurling. Thatā€™s our game.

What bothers me greatly is that it seems our Irishness is being watered out of us, diluted down to a sort of acceptable level that suits others, others who donā€™t live here and they really donā€™t give a shit either way, to them itā€™s just Irish peoples sport. This is Ireland here, who are we diluting this for?

Iiā€™ll repeat it. This is Ireland here, who are we diluting this for?

The last 24 or so hours since Kiely gave out has been brilliant on here.

There will now be serious needle if we meet Galway later in the summer.

Absolutely ideal. Canā€™t ask for more leading into the championship.

A lovely tonic after a horrendous lockdown since Christmas.

I think Kiely could have said what he said a different way tho. There was no need to call out Galway per se, he could have been more subtle.

the picture is no extension of the quote? what is your point?

Arguably yeah,

Was overblown too though in fairness, he was gracious in that the better team won.

Its nice to see the bit of needle there and a good rivalry develop nicely now off the back of it.

He was asked a question and answered it.

No more about it.

In fairness to Keily he has set the Summer up nicely with his fury and anger there yesterday. Galway never would have looked on Limerick as much of a rival traditionally until now
